So I've been watching Quantum Leap for the past week. It's a fun show. I mean, it's pretty corny, but I enjoy it. I'm aware of its flaws. One constant flaw, and it's not just in Quantum Leap, it's in a lot of things I see (mostly anime).
One thing I really hate is exposition. Ok, in some instances it doesn't bother me, but only when it makes sense. But it really just gets to me in instances like this.
"Big brother, wake up for work!"
"I don't want to, go away!"
"Hey, you should appreciate me because ever since mom and dad died 10 years ago in the car accident and you lost your sight, I'm the only one who can take care of you! Now eat these tomatoes! I know you hate them because your friend Ryuji choked and died on them, but they will make you big and strong!"
It's like seriously, who the hell talks like that on a daily basis?
I just felt like ranting about that.
So do me a favor, if you write anything, don't do that.
Ok love you.
Leap out.

I don't write like that! And thank God! That's just annoying.
AtroxChobatsu Says:
If I wrote anything like that it'd solely be for parody purposes, much like how you, Mel, have shown for us in the journal post above. We had better take care not to end up like the last bad story that played out before us, lest we turn into some kind of story about blind people. Or a self-instert power fiction, those are our worst enemies, ever since they slaughtered our men and gave way to hordes of recolors plaguing our fine country.
Masta Brock Says:
Unfortunately, in comic books and TV shows, there often isn't enough time for subtlety. In a novel, you could have the narrator introduce that kind of information. But in media where there isn't a narrator, it's hard not to put that in the dialogue. There's a limited time-frame to get across all the information you want to get across.
I think Marvel comics actually does that all the time. That's why they're a lot easier to follow (and more popular?)
DC (who I love more than Marvel) rarely tells you what the hell is going on. They assume you've been reading every issue of the comic for the past twenty years. lol
Zanzibab Says:
You shouldn't post journals ranting about bad writing! I know you hate bad writing because your parents were murdered by a writer who sucked and heard them complaining about his writing, but you need to hold off on the journals about bad writing!
Tyokio Says:
god that annoys me lol
Jordan Kendall Says:
"I'll tell you shit that you already know so that any audiences watching us understand past events which may have some relevence to us in the future."
Oh damn I ran into the 4th wall.
SHiDa Says:
I hate it when things do like that, mainly because it insults my intelligence as a consumer of media. There are always more suitable times to bring up stuff like that later, maybe when two characters are having a heart to heart or something, or a get-to-know session.
I find it extremely satisfying when writers use the more subtle approach, but that might be because its much rarer/harder to write.
Chazzie Says:
That kind of writing is almost like... saying a spoiler to the audience. The whole "HEY. I- I DIDN'T WANT TO FIND OUT LIKE THAT" thing.
Can I favorite a journal?
I was reading a book and a little girl said "These tracks are ever so long." and other things people would NEVER SAY IRL. It bugs me. A whole lot.
Sometimes narration can do the same if the author uses a really weird and loopy metaphor.
