I am confused, to say the least.
Once again, my art style has been compared to that of Jhonen Vasquez. In the past, such a thing would have incited anger due to my disapproval of Vasquez' temperamental mistreatment of others, but that sort of behavior is childish and it's behind me now. Simply because my art style may appear similar to that of an artist with a reputation for foul manners doesn't mean that I myself am infamous for being outrageously rude toward people. I mean... I AM, but I was a smart-alec WAY before I knew this Jhonen punk existed!
But I digress.
What I'm writing this journal for right now is to ask those of you out there who are familiar with both my work and Jhonen Vasquez' to explain to me what the heck is so similar between our styles? Because, honestly, I see nothing! Sure, the way I draw Dr. X has some slight similarities to his Invader Zim character, particularly the eyes, but even that's not very obvious. I've even done my share of fan art of his creations and apparently I'm fairly good at imitating his style for said artwork, but as for my own unique style, I just don't see it! Is there something of his style that has become so ingrained in my subconscious that I don't see it when I use it in my own artwork? Or is it just that the modern generation of comic book readers are so starved for creativity that any up-and-coming amateur cartoonist must be compared to Vasquez since he's the only one anybody seems to know about anymore?
Honestly, I'm baffled. Not offended, just baffled. What's the deal? Could someone please inform me here?
