Hi, Sheezy. I'm going to try getting back into the swing of connecting and reconnecting here. Might take a while.

That said, here's this.

What are your thoughts on selling fanart? Do you think it's ethical to make a profit on licensed characters without providing royalty? Do you support artists who do this? Are you an artist who does this?

I'm just wondering. I've always wanted to try my hand at conventions, but the fact that it's fanart has always worried me. Someone support or diffuse my concerns.

StarGazerAngel Says:

I always thought it wasn't allowed, to be honest. But then again, I haven't been to a convention yet.

skinnyvee Says:

I personally don't think it's right, but it's my understanding that selling fanart is commonplace at conventions. If others don't take issue with it, I guess I shouldn't, either, since I have no personal investment in the matter.

TehD Says:

I don't think it should be done, honestly. Fanart is fine, but to sell it, I don't know. It's not our character to sell.
Evidently, It's not minded at conventions, so I guess if every one else is safe, there isn't that big a deal over it. And I guess if that's the case by the time I go commissions, I'll probably sell fanart too.

But I'll completely understand if it becomes something that isn't allowed.

MarkusMaximus Says:

It's not something I'd do if only for the fact that I'd feel like I was leeching off the popularity of the characters and the only reason they were even buying it was because it was something from their particular fandom. But at the same time, I probably would buy some if it was actually well done and reasonably priced. It doesn't bother me that people do it. It may be infringing on copyright but it isn't really hurting anyone's business I don't think. I wouldn't say it's "right" but I also wouldn't say it's wrong.

Radical JoJo Says:

Selling original art: A-OK, no sweat.
Selling prints: Not so okay. I don't think anyone has a problem with small-scale stuff, like a limited run of prints for a convention. But, ya know, when ya start selling a lot of these things, that's not so cool.

Satchan Says:

I don't know, but I've seen tons of fanart sold at conventions...
