First of all, before I vent and start insulting people...I would like everyone to know that this vent is not directed towards anyone here on SA. I've just been reading some really fucked up, moronic, bullshit on my friend's DeviantArt page. And I feel the need to vent about it and have a good laugh.

My friend does taxidermy art, and thus, gets a lot of really uneseccary flaming from some really stupid people. First off, I would like to say that ALL of the taxidermy that she makes is created from "recycled" pelts. She buys pelts from animals that have either died of natural causes, were rejected from fur farms (meaning they were not coat quality and would have been disposed), or animals that were taken legally for population control.

I'm getting so sick and tired of all the uneducated "animal activists".

The first thing I would like to address is the IMPORTANCE of population control for an area's indigenous species.

Somone who claims to be a "conservationist" should know that a VERY important part of conserving certain species and wild life is population control. If it were not for population control of certain species (fox, deer, varment ect.) they would become over populated, over eat their food supply, destroy the habitat because all the resources have been over used, and thus, in turn eventualy become extinct. In fact, this is how many species have become extinct or endangered. A good and simple example of the importance of population control would be whitetail deer. The reason there are hunting seasons for them is to keep the population balanced and the environment stable, otherwise they would overrun certain areas and turn grasslands into wastelands.

Yeah, i tried explaining that too some stupid 14 year old and the reply I got was..."Well then humans should be shot because they are overpopulating the earth and I wish humans would become extinct."

Bovine fecal matter, my friends.

If this naive idiot had done any kind of research on the matter, she would have known that there ARE HUMAN POPULATION LAWS IN EFFECT IN SOME OVER CROWDED COUNTRIES. Umm...how about China? Duh. And there are even population laws in effect in some of the third world countries as well. So don't give me that crap. The only reason that people are not "shot" for population control is because we have government; a concept that exists solely to humans. It's not like we can rally all of the foxes or deer together in an area and say "Hey, there are too many of you, stop breeding so much." C'mon guys.

My point is, population control is needed to conserve habitats, resources, and animals. If you can't mentally digest that, then you are not a conservationist.

The other thing that peeves me is, when someone posts a taxidermy mount of a deer or a ram...it's okay. But Jesus forbid that someone taxiderm a wolf or a fox! People get SUPER! offended if it's something of that nature. That's pure idiocracy. I guess just because foxes and wolves are cute or cool...then they shouldn't EVER die or be hunted...pfft. I'm also sick of everyone paying SO much attention to wolves and wolves alone. Don't get me wrong, I love wolves...but wolves ARE NOT endangered. There are other species that are on the brink of extinction that need more attention in the feilds of conservation. What about elephants? Siberian Tigers? I could go on and on with a list of animals.

Now, a note on fur farms and animal products. MOST fur farms are NOT like the videos that PETA posts. The majority of fur farms are very humane. The animals have larger enclosures that are kept clean, all of the animals are fed well, vaccinated, and treated by veterinarians for injuries. They live up to their prime and then are humanly euthanized via injestion. They are not skinned alive. They are not electrocuted...and farms like this are extreamly rare and ILLEGAL in the US.

Also, fur farms are not at all wasteful. Most people assume that fur farms simply skin the animal and throw the rest away. This is not true. The meat of the skinned animals is actually processed and ground up to be used in pet and animal feed. So, if you feed your pet a commercial brand of pet food-guess what...YOU'RE SUPPORTING THE FUR TRADE. If you have any doubts, go read the ingrediants on your pet's food...if it says something like "meat by-products" or just "meat" without specifying the type of meat. That's what's in it. Also, other meat, bones, ect. are also furmented and prepared for fertilizer. SO GUESS WHAT VEGANS AND VEGITARIANS...you're eating of veggies is too, supporting the fur trade, seeing as those vegitables had to be fertilized somehow!

UHGG.

Also, on PETA. Did you know that PETA kills more animals a year then your typical fur farm? That's right, the oh-so rightious animals activist group KILLS most of the pets and animals they rescue. From Ingram's mouth (the head of PETA), "We are not a pet rescue and adoption agency, we are animal liberators and believe animals should have complete and total liberation."

Wanna know what total animal liberation means?

Say goodbye to your pets, zoos, farms, dog shows...all of it! I don't know about you, but I would like to keep my pets and also like to keep the zoos and dog shows.

Before I close, I would like to state that I LOVE animals. And in no way condone the mindless slaughter of animals for no reason. I've worked with animals since I was very young, I work part time with an animal rescue group, and am in school to be an exotic animal veteriarian. I've worked at kennels and veterinarian clinics. No one is as serious about their love of animals then I am. I, unlike others, am simply logical when it comes to hunting, population control, consumption of animal products, furs, and other related things.

Ugh PETA and so called "PETA" activists never cease to amaze me... (I almost got into a fight with a guy from PETA because I said I had 3 dogs)

KeithKeiser Says:

Well, I can't make my statement here, I feel that I would be against you on some matters ... and I wish not to make war. but as you have said, to each his own. We can't control what everyone thinks.
Now, I know as you practice your taxidermy, you aren't buying furs that have been just killed for that purpose. Some people need to understand that the animals were not killed to be made into furs ... as hard as it is for me to overcome, it is still something that leaves me shakey ...
But I'm not so fond of zoos myself. But I do understand that the animals there are there because they have some kind of injury or medical condition and are being cared for.
So I seem to be in the middle for most of this stuff ... I was hesitant at first to answer, but if people can see both sides, maybe there wouldn't need to be extremists ...
I'm sorry you and your friend have had to go through alot because of the extremists like PETA. I can't say that PETA is entirely wrong, but I do say that they take things a bit too far. Animals should be treated well and not like garbage, but they shouldn't be treated like the holy grail either ...
this is a very hard issue for me to cover and I hope you understand my views as well ...

KeithKeiser Says:

Even though you said this wasn't to offend anyone ... it kind of did with me ... I mean, I favor wolves and foxes ... and calling people morons and idiots who thought this way deeply offended me. I know you didn't mean it ... but it still did ...
ah, I'm sorry ... it's just such a hard topic for me. >_<

Hideto Love Says:

the part that cracks me up is look HOW WELL the 1 child policy worked for china! With, what is it, 1.5 BILLION people?

And if we talk about human population control, the nazi's are an example that EVERYONE will recognize. And how they accomplished their goal with such FINESSE.

Starving children, mutilating and raping women.

While I do agree animal populations need to be controlled, I wonder, how did animals do it before humans. That's something that bothers me about people killing animals for "population control" But I still understand the HUGE impact human life has had on the planet. Animals from Africa are living here, and lets say we just let them all breed like rabbits. We'd be over run by a foriegn animal which doesn't really belong here in the first place. They would eat up all of the fruits/bugs in this area, that we need!

SacredCandybarII Says:

Ah, it's so refreshing to hear the other side!

I'm not against meat or hunting, but 1) I do believe we should treat the animals well before we slaughter them and 2) let's do like the Natives do...use everything! For example, up here right now, we have some sea lions that are eating up the salmon supply and the government says it's alright to kill the minimum of 85 sea lions. Some people want them to go to zoos, which is OK for a couple of them, but if we must kill them, why not use the carcasses? Let's use the skins for hide, package the meat and sell it, use the bones for fertilizer! That's one thing that gets to me with this, is if people kill the animal just for the thrill of killing something, then waste it. If we're going to take an animal's life, we should use the resource that is it's body to the best of our abilities.

kharne Says:

Nobody is going to listen to you (except me and some other people ). Have you not realized that a lot of those animal rights morons do not listen to reason or evidence? Don't bother. Just shake your head in shame.

Lycanus Says:

you know the sad thing...... when i was reading this i was very confused
because i thought the title of the journal was Mormons >.>
DDD
but yea, people dont get the facts, or they just sit around and complain about stuff
they dont actually go out and do something about something if there really is a problem
they just blindy take the crap feeded to them from the news and internet

Kintaro Says:

vent away, just vent...

Media wolf Says:

You know; PETA behavior doesn't surprise me. It really doesn't. Think about it. At this moment, it has more than 2 million puppets just waiting for the puppetmaster to give an order.

On the other hand -- people who hate animals for no apparent reason, don't impress me either. Instead of looking at the scientific evidence about the ecosystem and somesuch, "Ar gunna hunt'n fer sum wolvez. I heer dere are werewolvez out in diz count'y!"

Aren't humans just awesome?

Lark Pash Says:

Yeah, I absolutely agree with all you have said. I have a DEGREE in this matter (Natural Resources Management) and I have heard some equally stupid remarks from people who say hunters are all evil and sinful and blah blah blah. People forget or just don't realize that hunters are conservationalists. My dad hunts squirrel for example, but if we find a baby one we raise it and release it back in the wild. Hunters, good hunters, are not cold-hearted killers. But, you just can't prove this to dimwitted kids.
