I killed a snail today.

It was an accident.
And I would never have stepped on him if I had seen him. But he had crawled out to the middle of the sidewalk and was dying of dehydration. I was looking out for traffic. I never would have thought there was traffic underfoot.

Why do I feel so absolutely horrible?

As for the snail... basically, since it was already dying of dehydration... you put it out of its misery. So, at least take solace in that fact.
