Now... as an Anime director, I can see where he's coming from, HOWEVER, 10 times out of 10, I purchase the licensed DVD when it hits stores.
That is, if the Anime is good.
Recently I just finished Death Note, and it's now airing on Cartoon Network. I love extending my Anime collection, and it's one that I will put there.
I'm not sure if this is the case around here, and I'm not going to make any assumptions...

Now he DOES go on to say that it doesn't count as advertising, and if your going to make an ad, make a trailer.
Even so, some of us do not have television or somewhere that we can rent Anime from.
Or watch it in a theater (as in the case of some Anime movies).

Therefore, some of us cannot "try before you buy". And thus fansubs are the only way for some of us to determine whether or not it is good besides word of mouth.
Unfortunately some words from mouths cannot be trusted, and everyone has different tastes anyways.

And there are ways of trying before you buy, I'll admit. Most Anime have websites put up by the licensing company, however, they usually focus on the English dubbers and at times, blow.

If there was a nice direct-from-Japan sort of "game-demo-ish" way of getting a trial of an Anime that wasn't fansubbing, then I'd go for it. But for the time being, I have not found one. And thus I am left with fansubs, but I will reinforce the fact that I do buy Anime that I've watched and enjoyed.

I guess I'm a little curious on everyone else thoughts here.

Damn I wrote a lot...
