Thats got to be annoying. If you do refer to the original image for referencing or posing then it should be entirely fine. The only time it becomes problematic is if the traced image was line for line with the same face, clothing, hair, etc.

...I may have to stay here too...D: Nevertheless, don't be discouraged. If you really want to make her eat her words, try working on a deviation with minimal reference, if any. That will blow her argument out of the water.

I mean, I sometimes use reference for a hand or something like that. I just can't believe that it's one of the same people from before. Let's just hang out here for a while, shall we?
