THIS IS AN ANIMATION CLUB NOT A TWEENING CLUB
I say that sprite animators get the crap out of here unless they make their own sprites. There are sprite clubs so go off over there, shoo!

GLARG, you still can make tweened movies.

when you say: THIS IS AN ANIMATION CLUB NOT A TWEENING CLUB.

I don't mind sprite animations unless they're funny. Hell I've even made one myself.

Tweening is acceptable as long as its not overly done, and can flow well. Sprites... meh, I'm not sure I'm too big a fan of em because... they just aren't as artistic and are kind of a shortcut. But whatever. Just make it work.

hey crapface you know what i meant or else i pop a cap in you face y'hear?
tweening should be used to replace animations for things that don't change mass or volume. if you use it more for than that you're abusing it. in sprite work, you're not doing any character designs and everything is tweened. I don't care how much time and effort you have put into a sprite movie - it's unoriginal work regardless.

actually, I take back the mass and volume thing. Nothing really changes mass or volume. You can tell when everything is tweened, though. Illusions can be created by changing mass and volume through frame by frame work to create movement that we would believe while running 24fps. Tweening is like rotoscoping, everything looks pretty unatural and you can tell it's lost life.

In my opinion, tweens should be mostly for dialogue and fbf should be for visual enjoyment. Both combined can be pretty cool such as the "real legend of zelda" movies. As for sprites, don't like them very much unless they are like vgdc's stuff.
=) i could be wrong from all of this lawl

can we settle on no sprites?

well aren't we in a crappy mood eh?

Sprites can be complex... Seriously... they take a lot of time and effort to make a good one. Yeah... I admit they're not drawn by the author... but the case is more about the story and stuff. And if you're good... you'll have a lot of custom made sprites.

I have to admit there are a fair few crap sprite movies arround but still... Its animation!

A fine point indeed.

What is tweening?

What rtil says is true, Sprites are not true animation unless you make your own sprites.
rtil - Jan 18th 2006, 8:14PM Link | Report
so basically if you make your own sprites go ahead and submit your stuff but if you're just ripping sprite sheets and being gay then you're a piece of crap but you can still submit your stuff okay!!!!?!?

Okay. I'll go ahead and post a rule about sprite animations regarding this... (made sprites? ok. stolen sprites? no.)

While I myself have never really enjoyed sprite animation either I am as of the moment not disallowing sprite movies in the gallery on these principles:

-Just because a movie is created using exclusely tweens and symbol swaping does not mean that an author can not have created a genuine fun to watch film with unique artistic work.
-Sprite movies can and do sometimes use more keyframes than non sprite movies (never more than FBF mind you of course).
-Just because a movie uses sprites does not mean that less work was put into it than a movie that does not use sprites. There are a lot of movies out there (go watch anything made by legendary frog) that are enormusly popular but also use nothing but tweens for the sake of their animation.
-Sprite movies are often a launch pad for animators to get their foot in the door, and I dont want to discourage anyone who could move on to bigger and better things.

This being said, I do however STRONGLY encourage the creation of custom sprites, for an excellent example of this watch Super Mario Reloaded in our club gallery. Now unless there is an overwhelming cry from the club for a banning of sprite movies, this is my stance. So far I have only had one sprite movie submitted and it was removed for lack of content. So really I dont even see the need for a fuss just yet.
