Title: Rozen Maiden/Rozen Maiden Traumend Creator: Peach Pit Number of Episodes: 12 (Traumend: 12) English Site: [link]
Summary:
Due to a deep trauma at school Sakurada Jun has refused to return. He spends his time in his room, surfing the web and ordering anything that takes his fancy, only to return the items just before payment is due. One day, he finds a web site that tells him to put his order in a drawer of his desk. He does so thinking it to be a joke, only to find that the letter disappears and a strange package arrives soon afterwards. It contains an exquisite doll, that, when wound, comes to life. She treats him as a servant of little worth, but over time helps him come to grips with his fears and in the life-or-death fights that soon follow her arrival.

The Rozen Maidens are a collection of dolls created by a craftsman named Rozen, whom the dolls refer to as "Father". Their primary source of power is a human host (a "medium") that wears a ring to symbolize their bond with the doll, although certain dolls have been shown to act without a medium. According to Shinku, she can only be at full power when her medium is present. Each Rozen Maiden has her own distinct personality, guardian spirit, and supernatural ability.

Review:
Okay first for Rozen Maiden. Three words: magical... talking... dolls. That alone is enough to make this series worth a look. Add the fact that the dolls are cute and sassy and make life in general difficult for their human masters, and it becomes a must see. I loved it from the first episode. The art for the whole series is gorgeous and the theme music makes a great addition to any j-collection. The characters are all wonderful in their quirkiness. The only thing that really bothered me is that while you feel Jun, the reason why he left school isn't really made clear. I'm told the manga gives a more thorough explanation.
Okay, now Rozen Maiden Traumend: Basically the second season of RM, it continues where Rozen Maiden left off. In his search for the perfect girl ("Alice") Rozen created the seven Rozen Maidens. The series takes on a darker tone as the "Alice Game" begins in earnest. The dolls must now battle each other in order to gain all the Rosa Mystica (Mystic Roses), which give the Maidens their life and power. The one that can do this, will become Alice and will be reunited with their father, Rozen. As the battle starts and the dolls slowly begin to dwindle in number, it's hard not to feel heartbroken as they fall. Traumend is open ended however, leaving many questions unanswered. Still, this is a wonderful series with a wide appeal, and I highly reccomend it.
