Tough... The coolest thing about this anime is that there are so many really cool characters. I like quite a few of them. Masashi Kishimoto does a FANTASTIC job of getting the reader/viewer to love and root for whomever the story is following at that time. Its not perfect story-telling, but you get hooked.
I love Skimaru and Chouji. Naruto is always a favorite, as well as Kakashi. I love Lee to death, and in Shippuden Sakura is finally kickin' @$$ and takin' names. Hinta = Adorable.
See what I mean???
If I absolutely had to pick just one, it'd be Shikamaru.
