I think that the PM system, in your outbox, it should say wether the person has read the message or not yet. It's really not that complicated. Myspace has that feature, along with Adult Swim private messaging system. Along with that, it also wouldn't be that hard to tell on the person's profile of the last time they logged in. Also; it takes FOREVER for people who logged out to disappear in the online friends list.
