Waiting Lovers
She looked up at the sky and thought to herself, "I wonder if he can see the moon tonight. Its so beautiful." She pulled her long legs to her body and sighed. It had been almost four weeks since her boyfriend had left, and she had yet to receive any word from him. Her friends told her that she was stupid for believing he would return, but she kept the faith. She carried her cell phone everywhere she went, she checked the mail for any letters he might have sent her, but never once did she receive even an email or a postcard.
She brushed away a spider that crawled along her blanket, then looked back at the moon. It was on a night, just like this, when he told her he loved her. She thought back to that night, so very long ago, and sighed. He took her out for a picnic, they sat and watched the clouds go by, then they watched the sunset, and watched the first stars appear in the sky. She was falling asleep in his arms when he pulled her away, ever so slightly and kissed her forehead. He said, "Your beautiful you know that." She blushed and pushed him away, accusing him of teasing her. He then kissed her nose and said, "I always loved the way your smell lingered around, even after your gone." She turned her head away and laughed saying, "Your so silly." He touched her face and lightly touched her lips and told her, "I wish this night would never end, I want to love you until I draw my last breath." She looked at him and smiled, "This night doesn't have to end, I'll love you until the stars fall from the sky."
It was like a fairy tale, that%u2019s what she always imagined. She could hardly believe he had said that to her. She could hardly believe that he had stayed with her for so long. She was never beautiful, not since the car accident that broke her face in three different places. Her nose was bent out of shape, one of her eyes had a scar running over it, and her ear looked chewed up. Yet, he still loved her. Even thinking about it now, she didn't understand why he loved her, she was so negative after the accident, she viewed everything with negative views, she at first viewed him as a criminal. That is how they first met.
He was a volunteer at the hospital, and his volunteer time was to sit with her and talk with her. She had seen him before, she went to his school. They were in different worlds though, he was a popular jock, while she was a quiet book worm. It was like in all the new movies, the bad boy with the good girl, but this happened before all those movies were made, before it was a Hollywood theme. They had been in love for so long, she could barely comprehend how long it really had been. It felt like yesterday that they first kissed, first made love.
She tossed her short hair out of her face and laid back onto her warm blanket and looked up at the sky and whispered, %u201CI%u2018m still waiting.%u201D She closed her eyes and listened to the night air. Slowly she could feel arms wrap around her waist, and she could swear a warm breath on her neck. A grin grew over her face, %u201CI know you%u2019re here. You%u2019ve come back for me at last.%u201D
She opened her eyes to a bright sunny day, and his head blocking the sun from her eyes. She reached up to touch his face and ran her fingers through his hair, %u201CI always knew you%u2019d come back.%u201D He grinned and helped her to her feet. Yet, as she stood she felt a great weight being lifted from her. She looked back to where she lay and saw an old woman. Short white hair, fragile, thin frame, yet wrinkles, not from age, but from a smile, lightening up her face. She looked back at him, %u201CI guess this is the end.%u201D He knelt down and touched the old woman%u2019s face and kissed her forehead, then her nose, then her lips, and looked back at her, %u201CNo, this is our beginning.%u201D
The old woman was found the next day by her grand daughter, but no one cried. For they could tell by her smile that he had finally come back for her, and that she was finally with the man she loved. Her body was burned, and her ashes her spread all over that field, the field where the woman and her man had first kissed, had first made love, and had finally been re-united.
