A rather disarming scene of a little cottage kiln in the woods.
In reality, this is the building that housed both Dachau's cremetorium furnaces and its gas chamber. Though the gas chamber was apparently never used according to camp records, around 40,000 bodies were disposed of by this facility. Its use slowly tappered off in later years since the increasing work load produced more smoke...which often blew over the town of Dachau nearly 2km away and aroused the suspicions of the townspeople.
Unlike other camps, Dachau was not a secret place, but the public was led to believe it was a 'rehabilitation center' for criminals. Many either believed this, are were smart enough for their own safety not to question it.
