Unchecked Dreams

Sleep has become nothing more
than a pleasant daydream filling the hours
between nightfall and dawn
a robotic feeling taking over
doing what they wanted
going through the motions
to try and pretend to be human
to keep me alive for another day.

You know you lost your way somewhere
between the steel cages that you try and pretend
that's a place you belong, soul begging harder
to see beyond the place you declare for yourself
eighteen six an hour the sum of your dreams
a dream that you had when you could sleep
running through your brain 'til eight fifteen
a dream, then five stations down the track
keep it up every morning 'til you feel sanity leak

What was this dream that you felt
when you were in such innocent youth
sheltered from the real world in a small make-believe
hellhole self-imposed madness junior jungles
fighting to survive between childhood and the nightmare
that awaits.
