Prologue

Sometimes I look back; but looking back does nothing for me now. I was once told that %u2018dwelling in your past doesn%u2019t help; you cannot go back and change what%u2019s been done, you can only move forward hoping that somewhere along the line things will turn out the way you want it to.%u2019 I%u2019ve run this through my mind so many times now. To be honest I do this thinking that maybe it will make me feel better somehow. However I can never forgive myself. Everything is lost; I cannot even live comfortable in my own skin, with my own name. I know things will never look up for me again.
My real name would mean nothing to a single person, but to me that name only brought pain. I killed a lot of people. If one knew my story they may have pity; say that it was out of my hands but I don%u2019t care. A whole country was destroyed and an entire world changed. No one, not even the survivors know exactly what happened to have caused such mass destruction and they know it had nothing to do with war, but they do know one thing and that is that you can not trust anyone. Those who live in this world have changed, I don%u2019t mean mentally, I mean everything about them; they just aren%u2019t human anymore. Those who are %u201Cnormal%u201D and have never changed, are regrouping and trying to become organized, while at the same time they are fighting for their lives and being picked off one by one.
The Earth isn%u2019t what it used to be, we live in a world of technological breakthroughs and what you might call times with a medieval twist. Many buildings were destroyed. Very few places are still standing and half of what does still exist, either there is no money and work, or people are just too afraid to travel there. Whole countries have been completely deserted because of lack of money and climate change. One positive thing is that even though we still have technology and are still attempting to move forward we have learned to live with the land rather than destroy it by our own means. The world has become a poor place and the rich are far and few between and technology has become secluded to small areas. Civil war has brewed and is still brewing, between the rich and the poor. The rich refuse to give up what they have and poor don%u2019t want to live like this anymore. On top of civil war, we are trying to put up defenses against these vile creatures which; once only myth have become a living nightmare.
Myself; I have become a drifter, traveling to small encampments and where I hear that there is a bit of what you might like to call an infestation and do something about it. This is the only way I am able to ease the pain of my sins. I have no one in this world except a brother whom I sometimes see. It has been ten years and everything is in turmoil. This is what I have broken and this is what I must mend, and these creatures if you wish to know them by their foul name, you may almost call them, vampire.

Chapter One

%u201CDo you think they suspect anything?%u201D A young man spoke, while peering through the blinds of a second story apartment, the late afternoon sun streaming in. Empty, crumpled pop cans and papers littered the dusty floor. His scarlet eyes followed the figure of a small girl playing ball in the street. %u2018How can parents be so careless these days?%u2019 he thought while waiting for some form of a reply. Moments latter he received a grunt.
Another young man sitting across the room, pouring over a laptop spoke briefly. %u201CStupid question.%u201D The first man sighed heavily; there was no reason to push his worries further when all he would get was sarcasm and attitude from his partner. They had been locked away in this apartment for two days with the persistent echo of laptop keys. It was slightly maddening when all you could do was, sit and wait.
Moving across the room the first man stepped on a can and kicked it; slightly impatient now. His lengthy brown hair swayed as the can smashed against the wall. %u201CHow the hell do you live in this shit hole? We%u2019ve been here for two days in this bloody mess and all you do is grunt at me; I can%u2019t stand it. Is there any sign that we will be getting our next order soon?%u201D No answer, the only reply was a further tap, tap tapping of the relentless keyboard. Sighing yet again he plopped himself down on the mattress of a single bed opposite the window; its covers strewn about.

The second man had the same scarlet gleam in his eye, his dirty blonde hair hung loosely around his ears. On a good day his hair would have been spiked, but when you%u2019re shut away until the next order, there was just no point. This shady apartment was his mess, but it was home. When you%u2019re alone, living life by the next command; who cares about the mess? There was no one of importance that would mind it, so why take time to clean? For the first time in hours he pushed himself away from the screen; leaning back he stretched and rubbed his eyes. Then looking over to the bed; his partner was now laying back with his arms folded behind his head. It appeared like he was counting the spots in the tile ceiling. %u201CSelus,%u201D
Selus looked up surprised, then paused a moment turning his gaze back to the ceiling and continued sarcastically %u201CThe Godly Drac is actually going to acknowledge little old me? Gee maybe I should get down on my hands and knees and bow.%u201D
Drac rummaged through his desk drawer ignoring the comment and pulled out a small box waving it in his partners%u2019 direction and threw it on the bed. %u201CIf you%u2019re bored play cards, I%u2019ve got things to finish but it shouldn%u2019t be long now before we%u2019re called out.%u201D Almost as if on cue, a ding came through the speakers of the laptop and a message appeared. Selus sat up anxiously, hoping that this would finally be his ticket out.
After reading the message through Drac stood up closing his computer, %u201Clet%u2019s go.%u201D

* * *

A small red jeep zoomed alongside the Rhine River of what used to be part of Germany. The jeep appeared as only a spec against the advance of trees and vineyards that cover immense hillsides lining the Rhine. Perched on top of these hills sit old abandoned castles that crumble; awaiting return of their kings. Europe is probably one of the last places where there is still some form of economy in tacked, along with Asia, and small parts of the Middle East. Europe itself is much smaller, consisting of the UK, northern France, Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, and Belgium. European government has combined into one creating a large country known as Pangaea Europe. The people don%u2019t know why the government had done this and it was highly protested but despite a crying voice; Politicians went against the rules of democracy and without any good logical explanation followed through with this change. Apparently it was due to a conflict of political interest among European countries, but other than that not a word was leaked to the people.
Entering politics these days has become risky business, full of assassinations and underhanded dealings. Citizens feel a certain abuse of power coming from high places and are growing restless. In the past two years alone there have been over 10 massacres; people slaughtered mercilessly by the hands of the government at political rallies. It%u2019s a Democracy turning Dictatorship, and those in power do nothing but contradict their promises to a point not short of extreme. Nothing makes sense and the people don%u2019t understand how things could have turned so wrong so fast.

The lyrics of %u201CPapercut%u201D blasted from the jeep stereo obstructing the serine landscape as it sped along. A lengthy orange hair braid trailed behind the driver, flapping violently in the wind from underneath a burgundy cap; the orange stood out like a blaze against the red convertible jeep. Gloved hands rested loosely on the steering wheel and leaning back, she focused on the stretch of road in front of the vehicle. Her thoughts straying to the task at hand as the faded paint lines streaked past on the crumbling un-maintained pavement. There was a certain excitement mingling in the air. Everyone felt it, the undeniable feeling that something somewhere was setting the world in motion; it was all going down tonight. A smirk played across the eighteen year%u2019s old features that could only speak revenge. Her skin flawless and pale in the setting sun; its%u2019 warmth was streaming over the western side of ancient hills and castle battlements.
Normally she would work alone and unorganized but tonight was different. She was meeting up with an old friend that she lost track of some years ago. They came across each other a few weeks back and how that came about was peculiar. However it made her smile. Just the luck of meeting such an old friend made her happy; she had never expected to see him again. It was just a shame of the circumstance.

Chapter Two

Blue; that%u2019s what she had renamed herself after the explosion, it was a constant reminder of all that had happened and it gave a reason to keep going and fight to make things right again. Reaching into the back seat of her jeep, Blue pulled out a large black duffle bag and set it down to take in her surroundings. She was in a small village out in Grey. Grey is basically anywhere outside of government rule. If there is any rule, it%u2019s criminal rule. On occasion you will come across a town or village that hasn%u2019t been branded but living in this area is not that of choice. It belongs to outcasts and to those who are too poor to live elsewhere. Many of the thieves and bandits out in this area are filthy rich, but they prefer to live in their own system of rules and guides. This is also home of the traitors, deserters and rebels of the new Government rule.
The new Government of any sorts does not touch this area, only looks down upon it, and does not chose to help those in need who truly deserve it. The only action accepted by Government towards this place is an extreme defense of any attack and a small infiltration of spies to keep a keen eye. With the exception of thieves and rebellion the government does not have much concern and chooses to put just as little money as possible towards this area. The Bandits ruling Grey put just as much mind towards the Government; they say that anyone suffering under the rule of that infestation is no better, for it is their choice to stay and live under that condition.
A heavy hand fell on Blue%u2019s shoulder; she didn%u2019t even flinch in surprise, just sighed and bent down to pick up her bag. The Village she was in almost felt deserted, there was not a soul to be seen
