Mercy Killing

I was sitting on the beach today, when a small (1/2 in.) black insect landed on the sand next to me. It rolled on to its back and began kicking around and just generaly squirming. So I picked him up off of the hot sand and put it right-side-up on my chair arm. A moment later a wind knocked the poor little fellow back to the ground. He began to walk away but could not get very far due to the fact that a few of his legs were damaged. In addition his right wing was bent over and perminantly crippled. He gave up and lay still, occasionaly dragging himself a step with his left front foot. After about 35 secounds I could no longer stand to see him suffer, and after a short prayer, put him down with a ball of wet sand. Now I sit and wonder, could I have done more?
