So! Here it is ... some of you wished a tut - now here you have it (:
read the text - the pics will not help you very much!
And what do you need for it?
At first: FEATHERS! (what a surprise eh?). They have to be real feathers no fake feathers.
At first you should sanitize the feathers (boil it or put it in a ice box and
quick-freeze it).
You can use the following feather: raptor, peacock, doves and parrot.
Don't use: chicken ... they are bad - really bad...
At next you need colors. I prefer tempera. Also you need: a white piece of paper,
adhesive strip, brushes of size zero or smaller and of course a motif as template.
So it works:
(Attention: This technic is my own (meeko). I have found this out and I don't know how other
artist do this.)
Finde a template, which you may have painted or only a picture (which you like).
Nextfind a feather, fitting for it. Take now the white piece of paper and fix the
feather with the adhesive strip on it.
It's really useful to paint a copy of the picture next to the feather because you
can't do this so easily on the feather. Attention! You have to
make this copy in the size which you'll later put it on the feather!
You have to copy it.
At first you have to prime the feather with opaque white (the normal white you have at
tempera). But only there, where you later will paint with the colors. Why doing this?
Cause:
1) the colors are more colorful on the priming
2) the priming area has a better facing, you can paint more easier on it
Attention! Don't put the opaque white too wet or too dry on the feather. On the
one hand the color would run, on the other side it could destroy the feather.
You have to go with the lines of the feather when you paint on it.
Don't go agains the patterns! This also can destroy the feather.
If it may once happen, then fix it with opaque white (it's like glue).
Give the priming time to dry.
After that you can use the colors. Attention once more!
Don't be too watery because the white can mix with the colors.
You allways have to dab the brush. If you don't do this it may happen that
a waterdrop falls on your feather - and then the whole image is destroyed.
Take small brushes for hair and eyes.
That's all ... ok you can fix your feather at last with fixer!
SO! Good luck! (:

These are done on real feathers right? How do you keep the feather fibers or whatever from spliting or rolling?

This is so neat. I've been wanting do feather-painitings for a while now and this tutorial will help.

you make it seem simpler than it is meeko..its not just a technique, it requires talent, which you have plenty of

So, do you prime the whole feather, or just where you are going to paint?
