Twilight

The forecast never mentioned anything about rain.

It never does and probably never will.

Those were the thoughts running through twenty year old Melony Cruz's mind as she stepped out of her apartment building, her briefcase over her head, keeping her from getting soaked by the extreme downpour of the slightly warm droplets. The midnight black briefcase rested upon Melony's equally black hair, the light curls flowing over her shoulders. As the raindrops hit the suitcase, they slid down, hitting the ends of her hair then slipping down and wetting her light grey blazer that fit her body with ease.

"Today is just the perfect day to forget my umbrella when I'm running late." The continuous complaints left the pouty and slightly red tinted lips that rested on Melony's face, a short distance from her neatly curved chin. Twin green eyes closed tightly as a shade from the small splash of the raindrops that tended to enter her eyes.

The weather just simply sucked. A grey blazer, white shirt, a matching grey skirt, and one and a half in heels were not the proper attire for a muggy day such as this. Lately the sun was out and cool breezes tended to pass by, but today of all days the weather had to be so bad. The humidity was high and there were no winds to brush away the sticky air.

A family of detectives. The Cruz family, Melony's family, came from a long ling of past cops and detectives. However, these detectives weren't your average everyday officers who took on normal cases. The game was vampires and the cases weren't easy. Everything was a secret. From day one of case one that occurred generations ago, every single case that came within Cruz grasp became a secret to society and to fellow co-workers. Nobody knew of these creatures for the people whom they fed off of died after the blood was gone. And, with skills such as theirs, the remnants were easily disposed of and nobody ever seemed to get the idea that vampires existed.

However, she knew. Melony Cruz knew and she heard the horrid stories of these creatures. So had her family.

Entering the local cafe that wasn't too far from her apartment complex and her work office, Melony lowered her briefcase and walked up to the counter, her long legs taking long and slow strides. Using the back of her hand to wipe off a bit of sweat, Melony placed both hands on the counter in an attempt to hold her tired body up.

"Black coffee," she simply requested. "Three sugars to stay please." As the words left her lips, Melony made her way to a small table, taking a seat and fanning herself all while thinking about her father's response to her being late once again.

As soon as she sat down, the glass door leading to the café opened and in walked Shiloh Nevou and as soon as the little bell on the door rang %u2013 everyone looked up to see. Usually people just looked back at what they were doing, but Shiloh drew attention to himself. He didn%u2019t draw attention to himself on purpose%u2026 he was just good looking. /Too/ good looking.

Sighing, yellow eyes shifted to the counter as he started walking towards it%u2026 his every step laced with a graceful lope. His tall, thin, yet very well built figure loomed over the cashier as he ordered a Styrofoam cup of coffee filled up halfway for the go. Whilst he reached around his back to grab his wallet, the girl working the cash register smiled a big bright smile at him and handed him a piece of paper.

%u201CMy number,%u201D she said.

His lips just cracked into a smirk which was tainted in every which direction and he folded the piece of paper and he reached out and put it into the breast pocket of her uniform. %u201CSorry, I don%u2019t have a phone,%u201D he said, and then paid her for his coffee. He took it and made his way across the café where all the sugar and milk and stuff was at so you could make your own stuff. He took the lid off of the coffee and filled the rest of the Styrofoam cup with milk and then he took the sugar packets and he started opening them by the dozens and dumped the sugar in. Sure, he was a vampire and human food was absolutely /disgusting/ but he loved anything with loads of caffeine or sugar in it.

"Absolutely pathetic," Melony managed to mutter under her breath as she was able to make out the cashier's words as she tried to seduce him. Romance was a thing of the past to Melony as she hadn't been on a simple date in years. Her junior high school years were filled with crushes and her high school years managed to be filled with dating of males of all different age groups. Ever since her graduation from her high school, Melony seemed to drift from dating, her heart already broken and shattered into small bits and pieces that nobody could even manage to tend to.

Cladding his torso was a white fitted tee shirt which hugged his upper half so snug it faintly outlined the curves of muscles on his stomach and chest. Draping over his shoulders since it was a bit cool and rainy out was a black terry cloth jacket which was unzipped and hanging open. Among his lower half was a pair of faded denim being held up by a black belt made from hemp, and on his feet was a pair of chuck taylors.

He had to be absolutely the most perfect human being on earth %u2013 if he was even human at all. He was inhumanly gorgeous, with high cheek bones, a perfect chin, and a very perfectly curved nose. His skin was just about as white as an albino%u2019s but it seemed to glow, contrasting nicely with his dark and shaggy eye length hair that seemed to be the most normal thing about him. He picked up the Styrofoam cup, and took a sip. His nose wrinkled and his face distorted as if he%u2019d just bit into a lemon, and he put the cup down and started dumping more sugar into it.

Receiving her coffee with a doughnut and sugar packs, Melony sent a helpless glance at the waiter, knowing all too well that he knew her habit of ordering a doughnut at the last moment before she left for the morning. Opening a sugar packet, she dumped it into her coffee already knowing it was a bit sour just by the smell. The black coffee did make her heart leap with just a smell of the rich scent but her nose was able to pick up the slight sour taste in it.

"Thank you," Melony said as she lifted the coffee to her lips, taking in a long sip, her eyes closed as she enjoyed the taste.

"Excuse me," Shiloh said, voice deep and attractive - velvety smooth, and alluring. He came up. "Do you think I could borrow this for a second?" He said, reaching out to grab the shaker that held sugar on the tables. "I ran out of sugar packets over there at the other place."

The sugar on the tables was pure sugar - the ones they gave you in the packets wasn't sugar, but just a different form of sugar with lower calories or something. The only reason they had those though was because everyone in America was fat.

With a flick of her wrist, Melony gave off the signal for him to just help himself. "Sure, go ahead," she muttered then lifted her gaze to meet his eyes, her green orbs coming into contact with his yellow ones. "I don't need it anyway."

So this was the man the cashier was flirting with, or trying to at least. Of course he was attractive, not even Melony could deny that. However, it just seemed that men had no sort of reach towards her. She had been told many times that she came off to people as gay but hey, if it would get people off her back why not just follow along and play the game of acting gay? Just thinking about it caused a slight smile to appear on Melony's face.

He took the think of sugar and just unscrewed the top and started dumping it into his coffee. Then he looked at her and his famous smirk came across his face. Hm. He thought it'd be fun to tease her.

"You know," he said. "You're late to work already." He said, looking back at his coffee. "And there's a man two blocks down from here. He's dead, you know. But the cops can't figure out why." He said, stirring his coffee. "Looks like you should go to work," he said, and winked at her and he took his coffee and started riggghhht for the door.

Muttering a stream of curses from under her breath, Melony wondered what would give her off as a detective so easily. Maybe it was her attire? Maybe her attitude? Who would know? Looking around at a newspaper from last week that was left behind, she caught a picture of her and her father at a conference. The headline read: Father and Daughter Cruz Stay on Top with Unknown Cases. Yup, that day the press was just snapping away, getting any and all of the slight information her father offered, nothing dealing with vampires.

Taking a crisp ten dollar bill from her pocket, she put it under the napkin holder and stood up, her coffee and doughnut still in her hands. Making sure her briefcase was over her head, she hurried out the door, praying her father wouldn't be so upset at her.

[Later I might change this story and make it a narrative from his point of view, but for now this it]

"That's who we are, Melony," he said. "We're secret, stubborn creatures. Everything we do is kept unknown, and covered up... but /you pathetic humans/ always have to meddle with everything. You can't just leave something the fuck alone. You just /have/ to have answers to everything."
