Fable: A Lost Ego
My home was burning, bandits were everywhere, and I was hiding in fear of them. I eventually stored up enough courage to come out of hiding and make a run for my house. I ran out from behind a fence and bushs only to find a large shadow of a figure before me. I looked up and the first thing I noticed was his glowing blue eyes, which stood out from the blazing fires of my home.
The large figure put his left hand on my right shoulder and began to squeeze into my shoulder with great force. I blacked out from the unbearable pain. I had an odd dream after that moment, but I no longer remember what I dreamt of.
I awoke from my dream to see myself outside the legendary Heroes Guild. I was suddenly startled by an old man's voice saying, "Ah, you're awake, are you?" He explained that he saved me from the raid on Oakvale, my home.
He then placed his hand on the doors to the Heroes Guild and easily propped them open for me. I didn't think much of it at the time, but I soon realized the doors were magically sealed. I learned this the day my training began...
I tried to escape from the Heroes Guild to go back to my hometwon of Oakvale, but I couldn't open the doors. I tried to pry one of the doors open with a large stick, but I had no luck.
A fellow trainee had the idea of escaping as well. I believe her name was Whisper. She ran up to me and cried, "Is the door open yet!?" Of course, I couldn't get the doors open, so Whisper started ramming into it. She had no luck either, and one of the adults spotted us.
The man who spotted us was kind enough to explain that the doors were sealed. Only those with guild seals could pass through it. Whisper then asked why it was sealed, and the man explained further, "It keeps bad men out."
Whisper was a stubborn girl and asked, "Why can't the bad men just climb over the wall?" I was wondering the same thing. The man didn't have an answer, though.
After that moment, I decided to train hard to hopefully graduate and get my guild seal as soon as possible. I was basicly forced into the situation. Whisper didn't take imprisonment as lightly as I did, though. She whined to her older brother, who got her out of the guild from time to time. Still, her brother insisted that she train.
The day had come for Whisper and I to start sparring together. Obviously, Whisper was out-classed in every way, because she wasn't training as hard as me. I whooped her ass. I was then given a sword from Maze and told to continue fighting her. I obeyed and stabbed her in the head.
For some reason, everyone was shocked by the death of that annoying girl. I was sent to Maze's quarters for one of his boring lectures. He greeted me, asked me to be more careful from now on, and agreed to let me graduate. Maze then raised his left hand to his face and pointed upward. He said "Remember, for every choice, there's a consequence."
With that in mind, I exited the guild for the first time and went to a town called Bowerstone. The guards took my equipment when I entered, but I just exited, got my equipment back, and snuck around to the back of Bowerstone. Unfortunitely, I couldn't manage to get over the tall walls, but I still got to work off some frustration on hundreds of travelling merchants. Funny how I made a choice, a bad choice, and wasn't punished for it. What was that about consequences, old man?
