Rhysen Emrys Nisien 'Meph' | Dark gray eyes | Dirty blonde hair | normal to pale skin | Minor nobility
Actually the fact that he's the son of a very obscure and small-time lord doesn't actually come into the plot beyond flashbacks of his early childhood. But WHATEVER.
He actually hasn't had a very fun life, oh no he hasn't. His life goes as such: Birth. Live a few years. Get sent a nice friendly 'curse' (I hate using that word, it's really more like a -cough- magical reprogramming of the way one's body works.. but curse is generic and easy so you know) from some sadistic, bored demon guy (hint Auhelon) who you never even knew existed, deal with abuse from a crazy father.. get shipped off to a school where nobody really likes you because you're a wiseass, meet a smarmy mysterious stranger (hint Faust) and then spend the rest of your life as a depressed, violent emo drunk.
He's always had a weak head, and was prone to headaches and mild migraines as a child. The curse was designed to change and mutate itself as it pleased (Auhelon found it quite the engaging experiment) and it decided it wanted to capitalize on this weakness.. amplifying the effects and suchforth. Now he has such added benefits as: Light and noise sensitivity, insomnia (wonderfully combined with mild and infrequent cases of narcolepsy), as well as frequent headaches and severe migraines. Basically a case of Damn completely sucks to be you.
He has very little pride in his appearance. He'll wear whatever's clean, and he often doesn't go to the trouble of even buttoning up his shirt. It's a miracle for him to remember to brush his hair. Sharp contrast to Faust, who I daresay takes longer than a girl when getting dressed in the morning. Anyway, not too much to say about him THANK GOD. He's intelligent and has this cutting wit that would make him fun to have around, if only he could stop moping. He's also violent, short-tempered, and has a hard time letting go of grudges. The other main character in the story. It's good times.

Caslin Sarrel | Green eyes | Light brown hair | normal skin | Military; 3rd Rank Alter
Alter is the name given to personnel in the government who agreed to have their DNA modified to give them limited control over certain materials. Theoretically they're the 'special forces' of the government during times of war, however society hasn't reformed itself to the point where a large-scale conflict would occur. (After humans rattled the world with their large explosives back in WWV [World War Five], many continents were completely eradicated, and almost all semblance of organized government disappeared. The Government is really all that the old politicians could scrape together, but they've been slowly regaining their former power). As there is no real need for their devastating power at the moment, they were spread across the nations in varying positions. Caslin was assigned to head a division that investigated murders and other felonies.
Caslin is one of the few that Meph knew during his childhood. Meph never really paid much attention to him, but during the year or so they were acquainted Caslin developed a deep hatred for him. His family had been rendered poor due to the exorbitant taxes that Meph's father, Adair Nisien, imposed. He resented Meph for being a lord's son, and he resented the fact that Kiryn paid much more attention to Meph than to him. He was also obsessively over-protective of Kiryn, and to him Meph was a threat to her safety. How he managed to get that impression from a four year old remains a mystery to this day.
He is devoted completely to his job, and though he may very well have a sense of humor he doesn't usually bother to show it. He is fair, often to the point where it becomes a fault. He'll make judgments of people quickly, but tends to not act upon them right away. Just your average working man. And god that green looks horrible but I was getting tired of dark colors.

Kiryn Isltre | Blue Eyes | Reddish brown hair | Normal Skin | Prostitute
Kiryn's parents died when she was young. Lucky for her, the Sarrels (who were both poor but generous) took her in, raised her like one of their own. Caslin took his role as an older brother quite seriously, and quite suffocatingly. He made it his personal job to make sure she wasn't in trouble at every moment of the day. Naturally, she avoided him as much as possible. It was during one of these escapes when she met Meph, Rhysen back then. She latched onto him immediately, as she was poor and Meph was the town's lord's son. Kir kind of dramatized their relationship in her own young mind, as the beautiful peasant girl who the wealthy lord's son is hopelessly in love with. Whereas Meph saw her as someone his own age to talk to.. yet still an 'icky girl' with cooties and much much worse. Basically, Kir saw their friendship as an act of fate, Meph didn't care much either way.
..Which is why she took Meph's permanent departure so terribly. He left without warning for a distant school to escape the abuse of his less-than-sane father, and Kir couldn't get over that. Her dreams of princes and their white horses were shattered. She went into a withdrawn mood up to the middle of her teenage years before running away from home. After stumbling around for a while with a limited education and no real trade skills, she finally came across the career of a prostitute. "For a few bucks a night you'll be his princess and he, he can be your knight in shining armor, is that why you do it?" She stumbles across Meph much later in the plot, oh noez spoilers. To be honest, she only appears in flashbacks and at the end of the first major part of the book. However, when she does appear she's fairly important in bringing round the end.
