Evening's Greetings - My Heart Burns (La Le Lu Part 1 of 11)

(Note: it's in script form because this was originally a script for a planned animated series. In order to not loose any of the original story I decided to keep it in this form. plus I'm lazy.)
Episode starts off with Sandmann sitting in his room in a chair by a table. The room is dark, the walls have a dark purple color and the floor is a darker purple. The room is lit by candle light, there are three candles on the shelf on the wall behind the table and there is one candle on the table.
SANDMANN: Now, dear children, pay attention. I am the sandman, I come to you every night to put you to sleep by sprinkling sand in your little eyes. I like to tell stories, every night at 8, before I put you to sleep, I will tell you a bedtime story. Tonight, I will tell you my story, not of how I became the sandman, but why I'm cursed as the sandman.

It's late at night and it's snowing, Sandmann is walking down a road in a wooded area with his bag of sand swung over his shoulder. He arrives at a small town, and jumps from roof-top to roof-top spreading his sand throughout the town and putting the sleepy children to sleep. The town is now full of sleeping children, and their parents who are also asleep. Sandmann marches off into the snowy, dark wooded road from which he used to get to the town. He begins to think about the woman he loves, and how because of who he is he can not be tied to a relationship for it would interfere with business.
SANDMANN: I think about her every night, why can I not have her? I work the night shift! I can love her during the day and work at night. Questioning such things can get me in big trouble though, so I best carry on with my business as usual.
The cold, winter breeze gets to him, he puts his hood up to warm his bones. He follows the road as usual, same as every other night, but he notices something different. The wooden fence is busted and a new path has been formed that goes into the woods. He decides to walk down that path and see where it goes.
SANDMANN: I wonder how this happened. I also wonder whats down there. I'll go check it out, it'll help get my mind off of her.

He walks down the path, now everything looks a lot different. At first the woods were just dark, now they're dark and have a creepy feel to them. He tries to ignore it and move on. He starts to get a bad feeling in his gut, as if something wrong is going to happen or happened already.
SANDMANN: Whats this rotten feeling in my gut? That's never a good sign.
He starts whistleing a tune, trying to ignore everything, as he curiously walks towards what seems to be a lake that mysteriously isn't frozen. He walks up to it and looks in the water, he sits down on a rock by the water. He depressingly takes a handful of sand from the bag and tosses it in the water.
SANDMANN: I bet the water'll fall asleep now.
Just as he says that a car comes speeding down the path, passes by him and crashes into a huge boulder, the car is totaled and the status of it's cargo is unknown.
SANDMANN: I can only express puzzlement that borders an alarm.
He gets up and walks over to the car, he panicingly runs over to the car after a few steps to try and help whoevers in the car.
SANDMANN: Don't worry, I'll get you out safely!
He shouts to the people in the car, and gets no answer in return.
After one peak in the window, he instantly turns white after seeing who it was in the car.

About an hour or so later, he walks down the road that leads to his house. He has one hand in his pocket, and the other holding the bag of sand over his shoulder. Sandmann stares at the ground as he walks on home, thinking about what had happened.
SANDMANN: She's dead. It's my fault. I had to question why I couldn't love anyone and she died because of it.
He walks up to a pile of snow off the side of the road.
SANDMANN: There is no bed for me...
He spins around and falls onto the pile of snow and falls asleep. The snow continues to fall from the skies.

Evening's Greetings is a series of short stories based on an old East German children's show called "Unser Sandmaennchen." The sandman was originally presented as nice and friendly and he would come to the children every night with a story for them. My version takes a different spin on things, now the sandman doesn't care any more. He's still relatively nice, but he's gone through so much shit that he just gave up trying and spends his time writing stories and telling them to the children. Unfortunately his stories are based off of actual events. This first story explains what turned him sour.
