The first painting on canvas that I have done in years. The sacred heart has stitching in gold thread, and there will be a detail shot of this in the next upload.
The piece has been in my head for a while, but turned out much differently than I expected. I thought it would have a red field, no heart line, no spiral sun, and the bird would be so large, you wouldn't really know quite what it was.
I don't normally paint birds at all, and I know the anatomy is mushy at best. The only reference used was for the sacred heart. This is supposed to be very abstract. Please note that the whiteness in the wings is a reflection of the texture in the paint. I use very thick strokes when I work in acrylic. I like that Van Gogh kind of texture.
- Inspired by "Rain King" by Counting Crows
"When I think of heaven,
Deliver me in a black-winged bird
I think of dying
Bury me now in a field of flame and heather
Render up my body into the burning heart of God
In the belly of a black-winged bird."
