Chronicles of Epsilon: Maverick Hunter
Chapter Three: The Hunter Returns
”…. and as announced by the ITSB, there was a faulty wire that lead to a catastrophic engine explosion, resulting in the 157 lives lost in that crash. The Regional Hunter Base will be there to salvage what’s left and take it to a hangar.” The television said. Epsilon threw his gun at the screen, busting it. “Damn it.” He thought. “There’s more to this than that! I know there is!” Epsilon said. He looked over at his sleeping daughters. He suddenly calmed. “There has to be some way for me to find out. I wonder if I still have my connections inside the Hunter Base.” He thought. He stepped out of the room and opened up his communications array. He scanned the frequency that Hunters used and decrypted the secure communications. It was nothing he couldn’t do. He could hack the Hunter Mainframe, but that would be a task, especially after the first hacking. He heard three familiar voices. The voices of Alia, Signas, and Zero came over his headset crystal clear. He dialed in Layer’s frequency. “Layer… Layer can you hear me?” He said quietly. “Who is this?” Layer replied back, rapidly tapping on her console to figure out the voice signature. “It’s Epsilon. Listen I need your help.” Epsilon spoke into his headset. “Why should I help? You left without a trace. Even Zero, X and Axl combined could not find you. I loved you.” Layer said back, realizing it was indeed he. “Layer, you know there could have been nothing between us. You know this. Because of your role in the Hunter Force, you could not be pulled away from your duties. I wanted to be with you Layer, I really did. But we could not because I was still active, and you’re a navigator.” Epsilon said back, glancing into the room, looking at his daughters. Garnet had rolled over and put her hand on Sapphire’s back. Sapphire’s golden hair was shining in the morning light, a ray of light across the bed from the partially open window. Layer let out a slight sigh and agreed. “Your right. I do have a vital role. I’m sorry. What’s your favor?” She asked back. “I need to know about that crash. I know there was more to it than just faulty wiring.” Epsilon said, flexing his free hand over the arch of the balcony. Layer began typing in her console. “I don’t understand…” Layer said, looking at the screen in confusion. “Something wrong?” Epsilon replied back. “Yeah. The file’s gone.” Layer replied. “WHAT?” Epsilon said back into the communicator, stopping in his tracks. “You heard me. The file’s completely…wait…here it is…it’s encrypted. 1792 Bit Encryption. Someone higher up knows something and doesn’t want anyone to find out.” Layer said, sitting back at her console. “I smell a conspiracy. I know it.” Epsilon said. Epsilon looked to his daughters. “I have to do it for them. Layer, what can you do?” Epsilon said, watching Sapphire stir. “Well I can re-activate you as a Hunter but as MIA. It’ll probably be easiest to do that.” Layer said, tapping on the raised up keys. She opened the Hunter Files, and typed into the keypad. She found his file, and noticed something. “Someone’s been looking at your file here recently.” Layer said, looking at the file. Epsilon looked confused. “Does it say who?” He asked. “I’m looking it…It was a renegade. They must have hacked the system.” She opened the RevHack program. They had left a mess when they came through. It started tracing the program they had used to bust in. Meanwhile, Layer opened the file again and re-activated Epsilon and listed him as MIA. This was risky, but it needed to be taken. “Okay, your now on the Hunter Frequency. Switch to Comm. Channel 2XG45. It’s a secure channel, directly to me.” Layer said. Epsilon quickly switched to the channel and nodded. She saw his profile pop up on the screen. “Layer, next time I see you, remind me to thank you.” Epsilon said, stepping back in the room. She couldn’t help but blush. “You won’t have to.” She said back. Epsilon was confused but he closed his array. He smiled, pondering what she meant. Sapphire woke up, sitting up in her bed. “Morning Sunshine.” Epsilon said to his daughter. She smiled a little as she rubbed the sleep from her eyes. Garnet still lay asleep, lost in slumber. He went over to Sapphire and hugged her. “This is for them.” Epsilon thought, hugging her.
---Thirty days prior to the crash of Flight 465R---
“Yes sir. All is going according to plan. No sir, all will be done. The equipment is being offloaded right now. Yes sir. Thank you sir.” The voice said into the phone. “Commander Isray! We have a problem!” a young reploid said to the chief of duties. “What’s the problem, Corporal?” Commander Isray replied, putting his phone away. “It’s PFC Yammark! He’s gone nuts from busting into the Hunter Database!” the Corporal said, pointing to a tent. “Yammark is like that. He gets that way. Just be calm.” Isray said. “Did he get the information?” Isray asked. “Yes sir. The 5 Hunters you’re looking for. Zero, he’s active duty, but currently assigned to work the aftermath of the Red Alert Crisis.” He said handing a file folder to Isray. “X is also assigned to the aftermath of the Red Alert Crisis. Axl is currently on vacation with Cinnamon on the New Florida Colony.” The Corporal said, handing three more folders to the Commander. “And Alia is still active duty as a navigator. This last one, Epsilon, He’s retired. He started a family with a girl named Allex. Has two daughters and is moving to the new colony. His next flight is 465R direct to Colony X-35.” The Corporal said. “Thank you Corporal. That is all. Dismissed.” Isray said, saluting the Corporal as he left. He immediately began to plan his assault on Epsilon, being he’s the closest one to attack. “This will be our heyday. Don’t you worry love. You’ll soon be avenged.” Isray said, putting his cap on.
