Sail Away Chapter 1 (rough draft)
17 years of age and I’m still not allowed to leave this god forsaken place Kresh thought to herself as she walked down the worn drafty hall of the orphanage. She turned to the right to face a putridly bright white door labeled Matron Farn. sighing miserably kresh pushed open the door, opening it to the sight of a very large woman crammed into her desk. 17 years you better let me go now I want to leave this forsaken town of Thira.
“Who is it?” she asked in a taunting sickly sweet voice. You know its me you old hag! kresh suppressed these words from bursting from her mouth even though she so wished they could escape without consequence. The large woman was now staring directly at her with her beady little eyes bulging from her head.
“Ahh Kresh a little late aren’t we?” the old woman smiled knowing kresh had been exactly on time as she usually was.
“ Ms. Farn I’m right on time” Kresh complained. Suddenly she froze up, she had just tried to correct the matron that was not good.
“Is that a CORRECTION?” Farn stood and slammed her pudgy little fists down onto the desk as hard as she could a vein protruding from her large wrinkled brow.
“I uh uh well you see..” Kresh began to jabber searching for an explanation to get her out of the trouble she had so easily dragged herself into.
“SILENCE!” the woman roared at the small jumble of words that had just spilled from Kresh’s mouth. Geez you get worked up quickly don’t you, you old hag? Kresh’s words sounded so loudly inside of her mind that she thought she had really said them not thought. Believing that she had said those words Kresh searched for another explanation.
“No sorry your not old or a hag either!” kresh exclaimed quickly without thinking of what she was saying. Farn stopped completely and held so still Kresh thought she had died, no she wished she had died. The woman began shaking the pigment of her face darkening to deep red as she held in a long breath.
“YOU LITTLE..” the words turned to a large roar of anger causing Kresh to flinch away moving towards the door.
“sit” Farn commanded the anger still easily recognized in her voice. This is it good going genius Kresh criticized herself as she sat in an old rickety chair.
“you’ve been asking to leave the orphanage claiming your old enough, but know you’ve just shown me that you need some more time her to rehabilitate from your illness.” Kresh’s eyes widened No! screamed her voice she couldn’t take another year of what ms. Farn called “rehabilitation”.
“Go to your room immediately your lessons will resume tomorrow” Farn glared at her the small beady eyes watching her every move as she rose from the chair and headed for the door. Kresh quickly snapped the door open only to have it stop halfway open when it slammed a hard object.
“OUCH!!” screamed a voice from behind the door. Oh great the preppy squad to make things better.
“Ms. Farn, Kresh hit me with the door!” a high pitched whiny voice rose
“It was your fault you were eavesdropping on us!” kresh retaliated, she was not in the mood for this.
“Go to your room NOW” Farn began ending in a yell that made the other girls standing surprised still crouched behind the door. Kresh ran down the hall into her room and slammed the door closed. She looked towards the window the ocean slapping the beach loomed in the distance. Making up her mind Kresh grabbed a chair and bashed out the window. Not caring of the consequence of leaving and breaking the door she hopped out of the window and began to walk down the road heading towards the beach. Those dumb girls anger rose in kresh ever since they had known each other she had hated those girls, they were all prissy little perfect children who were loved by Farn. They all dressed in skirts and dresses while Kresh just wore a shirt and khaki pants. They had always made Kresh feel so ugly next to them even though most of the village said she was prettier then all of them combined. Kresh was always self conscious of herself she might be prettier but when she had said that to them they searched for a new way to bug her. One day she had come back to her room to find her diary broken open laying on her bed. She had always kept her secrets in there except her thoughts on Farn which she kept to herself luckily. The next day all the girls kept calling her the cripple. I’m not a cripple she would always say to them but they would just smirk and say something smart like well were not the half blind ones like you. This bugged Kresh deeply she had been born blind in her right eye but had never told anyone thought they would think her creepy or demented. Kresh was wakened from her thoughts she cold water lapped at her sandals. She had reached the ocean and was close to the dock. Suddenly she heard a large creaking sound as if an old board was being bent. She looked up at the dock and saw a huge sail boat with a flag flying the symbol of the pirate. Her hearts stopped she was scared pirates never usually had good intentions when sneaking onto a villages shore. Suddenly Kresh’s mind began working again and she flung herself down behind a barrel and watched as the first of the pirates began descending the board. She ducked her head down so as not to be seen. lucky them they can go anywhere they want without being hassled by some fat old lady with brain damage.
“Go anywhere?” Kresh whispered to herself. That was it she could get away from the matron and all the other girls as well. There was just the problem of getting on the boat unseen. Her mind processed slowly the only thing she could think about was being away from this place and out on the beautiful sea. go its your chance! her mind screamed. Kresh flung herself to her feet and ran to the side of the dock. Checking around making sure the coast was clear. She swung herself up onto the rough wood her sandals making a loud slapping noise as she did so. She froze in her place waited a second then pulled off her sandals and put them under her arms. She rose quietly and ran up the board as quickly as she could to avoid major creaking. She jumped onto deck no one was in sight she saw the hatch to get below deck and ran for it as quickly as her bare feet would allow. The hatch was heavy but she managed to pull it open with out wasting too much energy. She slipped down the short flight if stairs and looked around. There was a table with food on it and a few melted candles. She looked behind her and saw a room with a bunch of burlap sacks piled up. good she walked into that room and began to pull away sacks after a few minutes she had made a cave hidden from view that was large enough for her to sit in comfortably, she even kept a sack as a door. After arranging a sufficient hiding spot Kresh began to look through the sacks for a food supply. Nothing could be found so she walked out of the storage area and went into another room filled with sleeping rolls. Closing the door to the sleeping area she tried another and found the kitchen she grabbed a cupboard and opened it. It was filled with jugs of water of which she took two. In another cupboard she found about five sacks of beef jerky of which she took one, she also found some apples she didn’t want to get scurvy. She heard foot steps above her and loud voices talking. Grabbing the food she ran into the storage room just as the hatch swung open. Loud voices rang out through the hull of the large ship. Kresh dived into her sanctuary of sacks and pulled her makeshift “door” partially into the fort to block any and all view. Kresh sat dead still not daring to make any loud noises. She hear the muffled sounds of rejoicing coming from the crew of what she estimated to be about 15 to 20 pirates. Suddenly she heard another voice and when this voice spoke all others fell silent. The voices were muffled by the pile of sacks so Kresh could hear non of what they were saying. Kresh huddled in her small area and drifted off to sleep that was all she could do now and all she did for three day. She only came out of her “home” as she had grown to call it to make the necessary deliveries nature ordered of her every so often. Amazed each time she returned she didn’t get caught she started to get cocky thinking she would never be caught. On the third day her food supply was on low and she had to restock making the most careless mistake she had made since she boarded the boat. (well except for the mistake of getting on the boat in the first place) as she left her home she left her door open leaving it an obvious place for any stow away to hide. Moving quiet as ever she snuck into the kitchen failing to notice the pirate that had just walked out of the sleeping area. Slowly he began to back away he didn’t want to do anything the captain didn’t want him. Suddenly he stopped but if he caught the stow away in the kitchen. He stepped forward then lunged around the corner he saw the girls face as he slammed the door closed in her face. Kresh couldn’t move she was to scared she was caught and she was stealing.. Stealing food from pirates. She began to shake WHAT had she been thinking she was trapped on a ship of pirates and was just revealed for the stow away she was.
