Gingerbread Coffin

Click. He pushed a button. Strange clicks and carnival noises came from the stereo. These began to make a melody when the violin cut in. He put the stereo on his shoulder and started to walk.

We found an old doll
That was out in the grass
She had special powers
We set a black mass

We sat in a circle
All holding hands
The doll bed held together
With old rubber bands
She’ll rise,
She’ll rise
She’ll riiiise!

I turned my head slightly as I passed the cemetary and snorted. There appeared to be a ‘coven’ of goths attempting some dark and spooooky ritual. Idiots. Didn’t know what they were dealing with. A hundred yards to the east and they’d all be dead.

I\'ll lay her down in her gingebread coffin
She\'s so pretty, all laid out in white
Lay her down in her gingerbread coffin
When we need her she\'ll rise in the light

A hundred yards to the east I lay out my items. The stereo, the gingerbread coffin, the dolls, the knives. No candles required, the night was a full moon and I had nothing to hide. I loved this song really. Symbolism and sacrifice, with such magic is made.

We\'ll look down at the ground
And into her eyes
Passed around an old teacup
Filled up with dead flies
Surprise
Surprise

A drought of the drink tasted nothing of dead flies. Thick, bitter, sweet, salty, it was never what one expected. It tasted like decay. Looking into the cup there were still three flies left. One last sip and I could hear someone move up behind me.

We brought, but not used
A collecton of knives
We\'ll remember this moment
Through all of our lives
She\'ll rise
She\'ll rise
She\'ll rise

This was where the song left me. I fully intend to use my knives, though I may remember the moment. My hands hovered over the spread for a moment before selecting a particularly cruel looking obsidian one.

Oh

I\'ll lay her down in her gingerbread coffin
She\'s so pretty, all laid out in white
Lay her down in her gingerbread coffin
When we need her, she\'ll rise in the light
Lay her down in her gingerbread coffin
It\'s a flickering, beautiful sight
Lay her down in her gingerbread coffin
When we need her, she\'ll rise to the night

I hear a gasp behind me as the doll began to stand. The knife flashed down and a trusly disproportionate amount of blood came out. A thin scream composed of cobwebs and moonshine rose to the air. I twisted my hand and it cut off. Looking down at myself I supposed I shouldn’t have worn white myself. It was turning steadily red. The stereo crackled and died, a trail of smoke its last gasp. The sacrifice made, the power comes. Another scream rises to the west. I get up and stretch, looking over my shoulder. One of the little goths is there, wide eyed. I stare at her for a moment and deliberately place two fingers on my bottom lip, widening my own eyes in feigned innocence. I break into an embarrassed grin a moment later.
“Eheheheh... Heh. Oops? Um, what were you attempting to raise over there?..” She takes a step backward and goggles cutely.
“ I, uh, um... Aah-a vampire?..”
“ Mmmph... Won’t get that, but still... Bad night you picked. I just opened this powerpoint, and, well, ever heard of ley lines? Lucky for you that you thought I was more interesting.” Another agonized shriek falls to my ears. I winced a bit and held out an arm.
“ Shall we go? The police might be attracted and I doubt they’ll be happy what with that’s happened so far. And seeing how far the werewolven have spread in the absence of free magic... The entire town might get a bit unfriendly. Leave now and the remains of your friends will probably get the blame.” She looked horrified for a moment before screaming and fleeing. West. Idiot. I debated waiting until the thing was gone and taking the wallets for a minute, but discarded the notion. Better to get out of town fast. Hitchhiking always gets a bit iffy when I wait too long...
