The serpent is a quetzalcoatl I think...Interestingly enough he was supposed to be represented in human form as a white man with fair hair, so when the conquistadors showed up with Cortez, the Aztecs believed him to be that human form. Unless I'm mixing up my mythlogy here.

Hmm, my previous comment seems to have disappeared, so I shall write it again. As EdensBlood said, it's a quetzalcoatl, the serpent representation of an Aztec deity. Interesting historical note: in human form he was supposed to resemble a European man, as he had pale skin and fair hair. When Cortez showed up, he was briefly believed to be an incarnation of the deity.
