Till Death Do Us Apart: Part 2

Carmelita stepped out into the bitter wind, muttering. Her thoughts were racing, tripping over one another, making no sense. Nothing made sense right now. She couldn’t think straight.

Carmelita just decided to avoid the subject… but then she stopped. What about her size? Her abdomen was sure to swell in a few months, and Sly will be sure to notice. There was no excuse for that.

She stood in the cold, the wind freezing the tears that streamed down her furry cheeks. She brushed them away, feeling like there was no hope. Unless she was fired already– but she wasn’t sure of that. Even if Chief Grizzly had mentioned it, she wouldn’t have heard. Christ, he was STRANGLING her! No one could possible concentrate or even give a thought about what anyone had said.

But what was even worse, the chief was going to try and kill Sly. And how is she also going to explain the possibility of her getting fired? Suddenly, an image of what would happen IF the chief caught up with Sly appeared in her head. She tried to push it away, but it just kept coming back. And Chief Grizzly might also know her address!

But, maybe there is someone who can help me, someone who would listen, Carmelita thought. Carrie had already helped enough, and she really didn’t want to get her best friend’s job on the line. Someone understanding… someone who can make up a plan on the fly… someone smarter, sweeter, and… greener! That’s it! Perhaps Bentley could be of some help! He is the hub of most of Sly’s heists! And, for the first time in the last day, she smiled.

Carmelita swung into her car, pulled out of the parking lot, and drove away. From the chaos, hotheaded police chief, and the shattered window.

Meanwhile, Sly had had his own troubles. In the last few hours, he had walked into a wall numerous times, nearly injuring himself falling down the stairs, and nearly burned down the whole mansion when the microwave exploded (because he had set the timer to 200 minutes instead of 2.).

“Gee, Sly. You really seem to be off today,” Bentley commented after the firemen left.

“Yeah, Sly! You nearly got a concussion after that fall down the stairs!” Murray added.

“I know. I’m just worried about Carm. She really seemed sick. And I hated to see her leave in such a condition, you know how hard she is pushed at work,” Sly sighed, staring into space, obviously in deep thought.

“And Carm was right. I was a little to overprotective. I stressed he out even more, and now I feel really crappy for doing that to her…” Sly said miserably.

“Oh, come now,” Bentley said, playfully nudging Sly softly. “It wasn’t you, it was just she wasn’t feeling well. But, I bet that she felt a little better, knowing you that you care about her.”

“Yeah Sly,” Murray said, putting his hand on Sly’s shoulder. “She still loves you, and I know that you love her just as much!”

“Thanks guys,” Sly said, sounding a bit more cheerful. “You’re always there for me!”

The three guys started nudging and laughing, carefree once more. But then, Bentley stopped laughing.

“Wuzzamatah Bent?” Murray asked, after noticing Bentley’s far-out gaze.

“Aww, it’s nothing. It’s just great that Sly has a chance for romance. Not like I would ever have one…”

“Oh, come now!” Sly exclaimed, in perfect imitation of Bentley’s nasally voice, which made Murray almost suffer a laughing coma.

“Everyone has a chance! I mean, just look at Carmelita’s hot-head of a police chief! He’s married!” Sly laughed. And Bentley had to smile.

“Yeah, and just look at Sly! It makes me wonder how the hell Carm fell for him!” Murray joked, making Sly glare at him, but his chuckles ruined the grudge against him. Friends forever, through thick and thin.

Carmelita was driving around the slushy streets of Paris, feeling somewhat relaxed. She just decided to ask Bentley for a private conversation, sit him down and just get to the point. But, she would need his solemn oath to not speak a word of it to anyone else. He was pretty reliable. At least, she hoped so.

Carmelita decided to take a break, and stop at a diner, have a drink, and then return home, hoping Sly was still alive. She parked, and stepped out into the sidewalk. She sort of shivered when she came out of the car, considering how Carmelita had the warm air in the car blowing. But, the wind died down quite a bit, and not much slush was on the streets now. It was late March, and spring was finally coming.

Carmelita pushed open the diner door and ordered a coffee. She hasn’t eaten anything yet that day, but she didn’t want to take a chance, knowing that she might throw up. So, she slowly drank her coffee, and thought about many things. Sly, the Chief, the baby, the secret…

Carmelita decided to stop thinking about these things. It was ruining her day, and she wanted to relax, even though it was almost impossible to do. She finished her coffee, and stepped back into her car. She closed the door and took a few deep breaths, placing her hand on her abdomen. Everything’s gonna be alright… she inserted the key into the ignition and drove back home.
