I'd thought i'd try to make a planet using lightwave to see how it would turn out. it took me quite awhile to figure it out especially the atmosphere part, and the clouds were the easiest part. everything was done using procedural textures and displacement maps and of course a lens flare for the sun. and yes i know theres no starfield. i gotta learn how to build one in lightwave.
Specs:
3 object layers in Lightwave 7 Modeler
3 object layers and about 13 displacement map textures in Lightwave 7 3D layout

Thats not bad, but I'd suggest some quick touch ups in PS, for example, so give the planet surface some depth you can emboss the surface than adjust the levels and change the blending mode.
But so far I like how it turned out. Few modifications and I think it could be great.
