A work still in progress.
Simple explanation.
I've noticed some "Style Wars".
I find "Style Wars" frankly dorky in the extreme.
Artistic styles evolve, and continue to do so. I think it's arrogance to pronounce any one style, era, or way of portraying something, especially something mythological, superior to another.
This irritated me in the extreme. Therefore, I did my best to put my irritation into something positive for a change.
I'm aware there's a bunch of things wrong with it. I'm also noodling around with a bunch of things I haven't ever really tried before (like CG monochrome and a couple of unfamiliar brush techniques). For what it is, and its point, I'm pretty happy with it.
For those of you unfamiliar with some of the beasties/personalities here, I'll do my best.
Top Row, Left to right: Classical Yokai Backbeard & Ittan Momen, Go Nagai's Shutendoji, Mizuki Shigeru's Medama-Oyaji of "GeGeGe No Kitarou" (He's the eyeball man standing on the Rokurikubi's head and toasting) Sayuki's Gojyo, and a Chochin Tsukomogami.
Bottom Row Left To Right: Classical Yokai Nupperabou, my own Yokai persona because I'm a self-absorbed bastard LOL, "Yu Yu Hakusho"'s Yukina, Classical Yokai Rokurikubi, and, last but not least, "InuYasha"'s extremely cute Shippo the Kitsune. :)
I know that Gojyo and Shippo don't look quite right. It's very hard for me to draw in other people's styles.
Sorry for the page of explanation

i am inclined to disagree with your assertion that all styles are equal; tengu's portrayal of these youkai are clearly superior to the highly derivative one employed here
