My current big project(among keeping up with my comics) is doing full-body color pictures of all my characters, divided into series. This will help me keep track of all of them, as well as introduce them to people who aren't familiar with them, or introduce new characters altogether.
I'm starting off with my second established ongoing series, Lancaster the Ghost Detective(Spike Magnificent being the first, for those interested).

I was going to say that his quiff of hair very much resembles Woody Woodpecker, but I'm not so sure now. The back of his hair is reminiscent of hedgehog/porcupine spikes to a particular notch.
Other than that, he's a mystery (let's hope you keep him that way - and hope no one else makes one just like him!).
Why he chose this career is probably the same reason as to why Marinnai chose hers - to make a different path from everyone's everyday humdrum of living ;)
