QUESTION (pretaining the sash on Dash):
If you made a costume design and a classmate saw your idea, he then says "I was wondering on how to hold a samurai sword without making it obvious, i think i may want to use your costume design for it", then you say "no, because if you do take it, your violating my rights". Then he goes to say "If your posting it on the web, I'm still able to take it cuz there you don't have a copyright to it". Of Course I say "If I post it to a site like Deviant art, I am under their contract of being copyrighted and if you do steal my costume design then i could 'sue' for trying to take my design (in a way)"

Who's right? The one protecting their costume design or the one that thinks they could take it?

Isn't it called, in a way being an art thief in a way or am I just being paranoid?

This is nice work. I love the shirt - my suggestion for the pants would be to make 'em as revealing as the shirt is.

I'm in no way a lawyer, nor have I really dealt with this stuff, but my understanding of copyrights (from having looked it up years and years ago for software publishing) is this. If you're really worried about it, I'd contact a real intellectual property lawyer.

You automatically have a copyright in the US for anything you produce that is not legally a copy or derivation of another copyrighted work. Whether you can defend that copyright is another matter. To maintain it, you must make sure that every single obtainable copy of the work is clearly marked with the copyright symbol, year, and your name (like this pic is at the bottom).

Web sites like sheezyart.com and deviantart.com are technically "compilations" so they have no rights to the individual works, although they obviously can copyright everything else not produced by other artists in the website.

Like, i can't copy right it's just wrooong i get ideas and use them in my artwork, like i could steal a hand from a picture because i sick at hands, but it's not illeagle...just friendly art busisness...without the persons permission really
