according to U.S. copyright laws, you hold the copyright just by claiming that it is your, because it is your intellectual property. That copyright lasts your entire lifetime + 70 years.
Getting something offically copyrighted is formal, and just helps build proof to your case that this particular peice of work is your intellectual property.
But its pretty cool that' u'll have copies in the library of congress.
