Scotworms Guide To Scottish

A wee handbook for the perplexed

A short note – Accents, believe it or not, can change wherever you are in Scotland, but this is just about my particular area, (North East) so don’t blame me if you get confused. =p

Let’s start with the basics.

Och – Oh / expression of surprise/anger.
Aye – Yes
Fit? – What?
Jings – Similair to Och
Anoo –At the moment (As in, what’s happening anoo?)
Braw – Godd/great. (Not so common nowadays)
Jimmy – Almost all prupose.
Es/Is – This
Haepenin – Happening
Richt – Right
Ye – You
Deein – Doing
Aday – Today
Guid. (Pronounced Gw-EE-d) – Good
Ben – Bin
At –That
Hame – Home
Cairt – Cart. (Often used in connection with farms and farmers, especially vehicles)
Oot – Out
Noo – Now.
Loch – Lake.
Burn – Stream. (Don’t ask )
Ats – That’s
Weel – Well
Fowks – Folks

That’s just the short phrases used in everyday conversation, more advanced stuff in Part 2!
