Fourth in my "Women of Japanese Horror" series.

Okay, so David Mack's "KABUKI" comic series doesn't exactly belong in the "horror" catgory, but if you've read the series carefully, you can definetly find a lot of the classic Japanese ghost story elements in the story of Kabuki's Ainu mother, Tsukiko. Tsukiko a.) was subjected to a sorrowful ordeal, b.) had a chance at happiness, c.) was then raped and died in childbirth as a result, and d.) came back (at least partially) in the form of her daughter in order to exact revenge upon her attacker. There's also several in-context referrences to the tales of Oiwa and Tsuyu, two very classic ghost stories.

*ahem* Anyway, enough rambling. This is of Tsukiko, her eyes torn out of her head by her rapist, pregnant with Ukiko (aka Kabuki), with the imperial flag and the Circle of Blood in the background, as well as her homeland of Hokkaido. On her sleeve is the vision Kabuki has of er mother standing under the moon in a wheat field.

The moon represents Tsukiko as a mother, as well as reflects her name, "Moon Child".

I am so damned amazed that someone else has read Kabuki. This is an amazing bit of work--easily one of the most beautiful peices I've seen on SA to date.

Hehe, I'm always shoving Metamorphosis at people, David Mack rocks my world. And so do you! This is fabulous, I particularly like the shading on the skin and the sleeve, and the way the moon overlaps her belly. Makes me want to bust out my watercolors again. Very nice job. :)

I love the colorful flow of cloth folds in the front..the way you did her eyes and the solid curls to her hair are so pretty. That small sillouhette in the corner is great too. Overall it's awesome to look at.

Love the red blows of colour along the right side. The colours in this one are so delicate, and I love the angle of her face. Lovely. :)

Your series are all absolutly gorgious (I probably spelt that incorrectly) and give off the mood of horror that they are. How on earth do you get the blood splatters to look so good/real? I love the surreal symbolic representation you use in each piece.
