I think Bowser's biggest problem is that he's a villian, but he's not very good at his job. He's kidnapping the same princess over and over for unkown reasons, being thwarted by a plumber every time, and in the newer ones he's become more a a good guy, which makes him worse since he's still supposed to be a bad guy. Not to mention hoards of incompetent minions. It all just makes him difficult to like, which is a shame.
