From what I have been told Earthbound is NOT a game about farming. I guess I can't always guess right by a title. Anyways, I admit I haven't played nor know anything about Ness except that he's a character in Earthbound (an RPG) and in Super Smash Brothers Brawl. I have to admit even though his design looks quite bland part of me wonders if there's more to this character than meets the eye.
