The Treason of War. (( prologue: rock bottom. ))

MARCH 24, 2075 - 02:46

You know that you’ve hit rock bottom when you find yourself awake in the middle of the night, counting your breaths until morning. When you find yourself waiting, anxious and terrified, yet wanting nothing more than to see the sun of a day that never dares to appear. It’s the same with de-toxing drug addicts, abused partners, prisoners of war --

-- the nightmares, the hyperventilating, the panic. The not-so-sweet release of knowing that it’s not over.

My hands scrabble at the sheets of my bed, weak fingers slipping against the starched cotton fibers as I search for something stable in the black. I find his warm hand, entwine it in mine, hold it like the addict who’s found a hidden bottle of pills, or the soldier with his wife’s heart-shaped locket around his neck. I’m clasping it with the desperation of someone who has nothing left to lose.

Someone who’s hit rock bottom.

People never quite understood what brought about the first bomb. Or the next one, for that matter. And the thousands of bombs after them. All they knew was that it happened, and maybe–just maybe–it was time to pick up the pieces again. The Phoenix-Graille Corps is formed. Their mission?: To make sure something like those years that rained bombs never happens again. But when their Corps Commander is assasinated by the Resistance, the once proud and organized Phoenix-Graille Corps falls into disarray.

Until Aleta Claire steps up to the job.

Though not even thirty, the young woman is able to rally the Corps together, and soon learns that with her new power comes the responsibility to figure out which of her friends, her soldiers, she can trust… and quite frankly, she can’t trust all of them.

At first a trilogy, The Treason of War is now a three-part story, whose purpose is to see the different sides of a nation -- the military, the politics, and the people -- and what happens when it all comes crashing down.

And here we go again!

I guess you can call this a rewrite, but it's really not -- ToW is undergoing a whole new reworking, and I'd really appreciate it if you guys read it over. Though the overall plot leads to the same conclusion, the events leading up to it are generally different, and I will post each as soon as I am able so that they don't pile up on me.

I'm so excited for this, because I'll smooth out everything that I would never usually have the courage to smooth out in just a simple edit; not to mention, you catch a lot more when you attempt to completely rewrite a piece.

And so we go.

... I guess my previous comment has no gravity after all. Well, anyway, this does seem interesting, so I think I'll give it a look. I also happen to be a writer. I just posted quite a few things, including a four-part short story, if you're interested.
