I had to draw
that manticore again because the more I looked at it, the more horrible it started to look.
The ugly lady was a guy at first. D:
He looked so god-awful I had to make him a woman. And he/she still looks crappy, the expression isn't scared/surprised enough.
Any useful tips on how to make her look more scared are more than welcome.
Also, if you have any hints on how to draw lion paws better, do tell. I suck at drawing them.
Photoshop + tablet + several hours of my valuable time.
And I didn't use the smudge brush. Not even
once.

The paws are good, I have no idea what is the problem you have with them.

I love the look of not using the smudge brush, makes for an interesting texture.

Something still makes it look a little cloudy to me, try playing with the contrast/ saturation, maybe?
I'm going to rip this apart, just a warning. It's not that I don't like this, I just think you're having trouble so I'm going to point out everything I can see.
The face is bothering me a bit, I think the nose is a little large.
Also, I think you were going for a larger mouth but it looks awkward with the face. Think about how this creature's skull would look. I'd suggest pushing back the ear a bit too show that the jaw is further back. Also, the mouth seems flat, it doesn't curve much to suggest there is another side.
The lips look odd a little large and shapeless, and they seem to hug the entirety of his mouth, even the edges.
His mouth seems to protrude out too far, and not line up with the forehead correctly. I also think spacing between his lips and nose would help.
His forehead curves back a bit too much as well.
His jump looks stiff and posed.
It also looks curved toward us which should have carried over to his head in my opinion.
The problem with the paws is they look really thick, and don't look at all catlike. There is no real indication of wrists, or fingers, they kind of look like bear paws.
There is no dewclaw and they look thick and a little shapeless. It'd be best to reference your housecat, or look at some images of a lion online.
It looks pretty bearlike in the entire image, really, the stomach doesn't look as lean as it ought to after the ribs kinda tuck in where the stomach is. The full body looks shorter and thicker than a lion really does, I'd lengthen it out and define the shape a bit more.
With the girlman's face, I'd suggest making the eyes rounder, especially the bottom lid. The eyebrows should be raised up more too. Stress lines/wrinkles should be more apparent in between the eyebrows too, they are pushing together skin.
The mouth on her is what looks the most awkward it's a combination of expression and the fact that it's crooked.
The mouth looks like it's coming out from one side of her face, and is not moving evenly on both sides of her face, which looks unnatural. It almost looks like she's trying to make a funny face. I really suggest making different "scarred faces" in the mirror, until you decide what you like.
Again, I'm sorry if this comes out super overly critical, I was looking at this for quite a while trying to pick out what I think you needed help with. I think this is great and I love the coloring, but I saw it in the "Critique Encouraged" Club, so I went nuts.
