“What do you mean he’s dead?”
“He’s gone, Logan. They say it’s suicide.”
“I don’t believe it.”
She’s holding back tears. I can tell. “I… I don’t, either. I don’t want to. What will the Corps do without a Corps Commander?”
Her voice is so faint, just like her breath. Her pulse.
“It’s okay, Aleta. Your uncle was a good man. He built the Corps to… to make sure that we were strong enough to survive anything. We can survive this.”
“I can’t, Logan. I don’t want to do this anymore.”
In the back of my mind I half-expect her to drop dead before my eyes.
