Left to right:

Their race is very distantly descended from the human race, and theirs is a world that is a bit darker and much, much cleaner than ours.
They are also shorter.

There are a few distinct differences between males and females:
Males have two points to their ears. Females have three.
Males have two tails. Females have one.
Males tend to be a bit slimmer than girls.
Females tend to have warmer skin tones than males.
Males tend to have slimmer eyebrows than females.
Females are more likely to have oddly-shaped tails (normal tails being a bit dog/horse-like).

Tidbits of information here:
Jacob grew up in a forest with both parents and a lot of animals.
He is somewhat dog-like in behavior, with a bit of feline finickiness. He is not accustomed to city life (having only recently entered it), and dislikes pants (being used to wearing shorts). It is his sincerest desire to either go back to the forest, but he knows his parents will never agree to it (wanting him to get a decent education). He has little concern for how others view him, with the exception of his parents; their opinion means everything. He is the only athletic person of the four of them, and he likes to jump off of trees.

Julia is considered to be rather physically deformed, looking very much like "those people from long ago", long before their calendar began (there are museums with pictures depicting us modern-day people). She has no tail, a very "curious and illogical skin color", elvish ears instead of their fin-like points, et cetera. She and the few people like her support the notion that they evolved from humans (not confirmed in their world; I only know 'cause I'm the one with the story). She's also one of very few people allowed to wear clothes that show her legs (not considered socially acceptable, at the time-the reason it is permitted with her remains a mystery).

Lazarus has skin much too light to be healthy; he's white. No skin pigmentation (but I'm thinking their skin is thicker, since you can't see his veins or anything). In order to protect himself from the sun, he carries a black parasol. He's a major fashion bug (yes, fashion exists). Being something of a spoiled rich kid, he always has access to the latest and greatest styles. He dislikes when he can't get what he wants, whatever the reason for being told "no".

Alyssa is Lazarus's step-sister, her mother marrying his father. She is quiet around friends but talkative around strangers. The why remains a puzzle to anyone that knows her. Her tail is hairless and ends in a point, a recessive trait usually accompanied by oddly-colored hair (in her case, pink streaks on blue). She likes pink and red things, but Lazarus makes her wear blue frequently, saying "it's the only thing that really works". He hates when she wears reds (like in this picture).
