The motif for this picture is Abandonment.

The main character is standing on the top of an old abandoned building in an abandoned city. His companion is abandoning him and he clutches a pocket watch that doesn't tick anymore (all six clocks in the clock tower have stopped at midnight), time having no more meaning. On the other end of the clock is a cross (also one around his neck) to represent his desperation to try and connect with something, but that too has abandoned him because the human race has died off and therefore its ideas are starting to be forgotten with the decay of literature and improperly kept records. The main character is looking into another world (the viewers' world) in hopes of finding something new.

Don't know why I drew this. I just started and didn't stop until I was happy. Must be because I've been up for 36 hours trying to mend my sleeping schedule : / DERP.

For what it's worth though, I think my sleep deprivation was TOTALLY worth it because of this illustration. This is all freehand, no rulers or references were used. My influences were Clover (wing design) and Origin: Spirits of The Past (the overgrown tree/city and shattered moon).

The original picture was draw with a red ballpoint pen. I thought it looked much better black.

Why have I never drawn backgrounds before? I tried out a TON of new techniques in this piece so I would LOVE to hear feedback.

Great work on the background. I love how detailed it is and how it retains the look of penstrokes.

Critique is as follows:
One of the first things I noticed about this piece is the horizontal lines in the sky. They seem almost as if the city had be set on fire, and only a smoldering version remains, devoid of all life.

The buildings on the right have shading that doesn't line up, adding contrast but leaving me with a feeling that they are pasted in without much effort into fleshing them out and adding the level of detail that is present elsewhere.

The bridge and the skyscraper with a chunk out of it are awesome; those are my favorite elements of the far right.

The way you have the forest on the left overtaking everything it touches, moving in on the city really adds a sinister feeling. Definitely reminds me of Origins. The way it droops over reminds me of a tidal wave, coming to wipe out what little life remains.

The middleground of the left side is very confusing for me, that is, what is around the character who is leaving. I can't determine what is city, what is forest, and what is the transitioning between the two. The lines don't really form many recognizable shapes.

The character design is a strong point, here. Anthro + wings = quite awesome.
My only complaint about the subjects is that I can't tell where his head is pointed. The rest of the body is well defined, but the head confuses me.

The symbolism in this is awesome, love the whole 'looking into our world' concept.

So overall, I love the style and would like to see more of it from you, so stick with it ;3
