Willow

A character for my NaNo story this year: Willow the fairy.

In the world where Willow lives, fairies ordinarily cannot speak, and are usually not considered more than intelligent animals. Willow, who is of human intelligence, is very unsure of her own humanity. Should she really consider herself on the same level as other sentient races, or is she just an animal? Does she have a soul? She wears jewelry to make herself feel more human, but is she just fooling herself?

These issues aside, Willow also feels very vulnerable. She has lived in the wild for a good portion of her life, and has seen many other fairies fall prey to predators. Though her greater-than-normal intelligence has saved her more than once, she fears that one day she will meet a similar fate. Her attempts to connect with people have mostly been fruitless, as they often consider her nothing more than a talking animal; interesting, to be sure, but as an oddity, not as a friend.

Willow seeks safety, friendship, and a confirmation that she is more than just an animal... though she is losing hope that she will ever find any of those things.
