The Artists Saved Me

Who’s important in society?
The doctors with their Western philosophies
Stuck me with needles, checked my vitals and kept my heart throbbing painfully
For the sole purpose of survival – then they left.
But the knitter’s blanket kept me safe and warm
On the long lonely nights that I couldn’t sleep.
Melodic notes swept my soul away
From the chemical collapse of a broken shell.
Soft words fell like Phoenix tears in a rhythmic rain
And healed my burns with their poetic touch.
All the while the scientists measured and molded
The ingredients – to construct a condensed white pill.
Celebrities, with all their money, ‘beauty,’ and fame
Only made me feel imperfect and inferior: flawed like a human.
The musicians, the creators, the writers –
They are the ones who saved me.
