OK, so I showed this picture to my mother and she says that it doesn't look like Johnny at all. Can someone help me fix it?

It usually goes wrong all the time with the eyes. Thats the one feature you need to get almost dead on to make any resemblence.

Mothers can be very critical.

As far as getting someones "look" I find the most important thing is to get the head shape right and (the big one: ) Try and get the eyes and eyebrows perfect. Treat them like their own masterpiece, that's where most of our face recognition comes from.

Since you have it scanned, you could erase it and try again, or try to draw a separate one and manipulate the details.

Critiquing the overall drawing, I find the head to be a little too circular, and lacking shape.
Again, the eyes lack detail, those should be something you put a lot of work into.
The nose looks a bit narrow and linear along with being slightly unrefined. Blending it a bit more (esp. the nostrils) would help, along with adding a slight angle.
The mouth looks a little shapeless and slightly cartoony.

The problem might be that you're used to drawing from imagination. Which, really isn't a problem at all, but, in attempting realism it's best to really stare at, and study what you see exactly. Instead of sketching ahead, try working on a little as you go, it should help.

o.o it does look a decent bit like him...but this pic of him, the actual photograph, makes him look like Chuck Mangione.
