Chapter 9 – Snowed Inn

Alison lied in her bed, cuddling a pillow as she tried to find some kind of rest for the day ahead. She rested quietly with her eyes closed until a bright light filled the dim room. Alison winced as the bright light shined through her eye lids and almost blinded her when she tried to focus her sleepy gaze on the source. She sat up slowly using her hand to block out most of the light until the glow finally faded. Alison blinked away the spots from her eyes before focusing her sleepy eyes on the origin of the light.

She gasped softly at the sight before her. “Oh my…” She whispered as she saw a small black and blue pokémon on the couch beside an already awake Rhea. Alison scrambled out of her bed and ended up falling onto the hard wood floors as her legs became tangled in the quilts.

“I am seriously starting to hate gravity” She grumbled as she freed her self from the blankets and crawled over to the couch. She watched in awe as the small pokémon sat up and opened its large crimson eyes, focusing them on her. It tilted its head slightly as it stared up at her “Ri-Riolu?”

Alison smiled brightly, “Awe! You’re so cute!” She giggled as she reached out and pet its head softly, earning a happy cry from the baby pokémon. “Riolu, huh? Let’s see what the Dex has to say about you…” She muttered while pulling her pokedex out of her bag. She opened the dark blue device and focused it on the newly hatched pokémon.

Riolu, the emanation pokémon. It has the peculiar power of being able to see emotions such as joy and rage in the form of waves.

“Interesting.” She looked up at the pokémon watching it as it followed Rheas every move. Alison sat back and laughed lightly as Rhea circled around the Riolu. “He’s cute right Rhea?” Alison smiled

“Miss, Miss!” her pokémon agreed as she floated above the Riolu.

“Reminds me of when you hatched from your egg!” the trainer muttered remembering back to years before when the egg her father had given her hatched, after weeks of the young girl taking care of it.

There was a soft knock on the door before it was opened by Victoria. She poked her head into the room and spotted the baby pokémon. She smiled brightly before running over “It hatched!”

Riolu looked over tilting its head slightly.

Alison smiled and nodded “Yeah, just a few minutes ago! It’s so cute!”

Victoria nodded “Baby pokémon usually are,” She smiled petting the pokémon’s head softly.

“Did you catch him yet?”

“Catch it,” Alison shook her head. “No, not yet, I didn’t think about it”

“Well… you did save him…”

“Him? You know it’s a boy?”

Victoria nodded “Yeah, can’t you?”

Alison shook her head “No… How can you?”

Victoria shrugged “Call it a gift” She smirked slightly, before remembering something. “Oh! I came up her to tell you we can’t continue down the mountain.”

“What? Why?”

“The blizzard really picked up last night and snowed us in.”

“Oliver’s not going to be happy.”

“He actually took it rather well. He grumbled something about snow but has been grooming his pokémon in the lobby.”

“At least he didn’t try to use his Ninetales to melt the snow…”

“He thought about it but he wouldn’t exactly get very far. The wind’s really blowing outside.”

Alison nodded “Well at least we’re inside…” She shifted her gaze to the frosted window.

“Better then being trapped outside,” Victoria stated as she sat on the desk chair.

While the two trainers conversed the curious Riolu slid off the couch and explored the contents of Alison’s bag. Rhea hovered next to him, making sure he didn’t touch anything potentially harmful. He pulled out a small brown root and sniffed it before nibbling on it. The sudden shock of bitterness made the pokémon cringe and toss the root aside. He pushed the bag aside before looking around the room and spotting the open door.

Riolu looked over at the two conversing humans before making his way out of the room and starting to explore. Rhea saw the pokémon eave the room and followed after him to make sure he didn’t get into any trouble.

Alison sighed and looked around the room noting the absence of pokémon. “Um… where did Rhea and the Riolu go?”

Victoria looked around the room and spotted the door slightly opened. “They escaped!”

Alison scrambled to her feet and ran out into the hall scanning the halls for any sign of the missing pokémon. She spotted a whip of violet disappear behind a corner and followed it.

“Rhea? Riolu?!” She whispered harshly as she searched. She spotted the black and blue new born balancing on the banister staring down into the lobby.

“Riolu!” The young trainer called as she bolted down the hall, but it was too late. Riolu leapt from his perch. A sharp yelp followed shortly after. Alison peered over the banister spotting Oliver on the floor with a startled Espeon beside him. Riolu stood a few feet away bouncing happily. “Riolu!”

Riolu looked up laughing lightly before it ran off again.

“No wait!” Alison shouted as she jumped down the stairs, Victoria right behind her.

Oliver muttered a curse under his breath as he saw the girls follow the blue blur into the kitchen. “What the hell is going on…?” He grumbled climbing to his feet. More yells and crashing came from the next room causing him to roll his eyes and find out what was happening.

“Riolu stop!” Victoria commanded. The pokémon stuck his tongue out before continuing to munch on the asper berry in his paws.

Alison crossed her arms and glared at the pokémon perched on a high shelf. “Oh you little!”

“Pathetic…” An irritated voice stated form the door way. Alison looked over her shoulder as Oliver entered the room.

“Oh like you can do better.” She snapped.

“He thinks this is a game” He countered “and you’re playing around with him”

“Right…”

“Watch,” he grumbled as he glared up at the hyperactive pokémon. “Riolu, come down from there” He commanded in a calm but firm tone.

The Riolu just finished his berry and stuck his tongue out. Oliver’s eye twitched slightly.

Alison laughed lightly which only served to further annoy him.

“Get down from there now, Riolu” He tried again. Riolu just looked away ignoring him. The trainer growled before glancing down to the psychic Pokémon beside him. “Espeon”

Espeon’s eyes glowed faintly as he tried to levitate the hyperactive Pokémon, an aura started to appear around Riolu but the Pokémon was already on the move. He leapt off the shelf, his legs catching fire as he came down on Espeon. The sun Pokémon jumped back out of harms way leaving the Riolu to land on his feet in the middle of the kitchen before taking off into another room.

The trainers just stared at the scorched floor in shock.

Victoria snapped out of her stupor. “That was a blaze kick!”

“Blaze kick?” Alison questioned.

“Yeah, it’s usually learned by Hitmonlee or Blaziken but not Lucario…”

“Lets figure that out later, if you didn’t notice the little monster just escaped” Oliver reminded before the small group resumed the chase.

The group chased Riolu all over the small in, getting other trainers involved in catching the little terror. The small Pokémon evaded every attempt. The morning passed as the game continued, by noon most of the trainers gave up, save for Alison and Victoria.

“He’s over here!”

“Don’t let him slip by!”

Alison and Victoria ran down one of the hall ways trying to corner the hyperactive Riolu. The end of the hallway came into view once they turned the corner “Hah! Gotcha now!” Alison thought aloud but her triumphant smirk fell when she noticed Riolu wasn’t stopping. “Rhea, Thunderbolt!”

Rhea flew ahead, eyes already glowing bright. She released a strong thunder bolt just missing her target as he leapt forward. Riolu bounced forward dodging the attack before crashing through the large window. Alison and Victoria skidded to a stop as a large gust of frigid air rushed past them. “Too cold!” Alison yelped as she hugged herself.

Victoria looked down to see a small hole in the two foot deep snow. “Looks like he’s stuck!”

Alison looked over the edge, careful not to cut herself on the glass. She saw the Riolu had sunken into the snow struggling to get out and smirked. “Finally!”

Victoria saw a orange-red glow appear around the pokémon and gasped “Catch it before he uses blaze kick!”

“Oh right!” Alison dug into her pocket pulling out the first ball she grabbed and threw the green ball out into the icy wind. The poke ball struck the target causing the Riolu to disappear into the poke ball with in a red flash.

Alison stared down at the ball watching as it shook and rocked bath and forth before it settled in the small crater. Alison smiled brightly. “Yes! I caught him!” She cheered happily. Rhea floated down and retrieved the poke ball. Alison bounced happily as the poke ball was dropped in her hand. “Finally I caught a pokémon!” She hugged the ball while giggling madly.

Victoria smiled slightly “Congrats on your first capture, but…”

Alison looked over at the girl “but what?” The young teen asked before the answer came in the form of a chilling gust. Alison shivered and pulled her sweater tightly around her. “Oh… Yeah…”

Victoria nodded before looking down the hall noticing the damage that had been done during the chase. “Oh boy…” her shoulders slumped slightly.

Victoria patted her shoulder lightly, “At least you caught him.”

Alison smiled slightly and nodded “Yeah…” She sighed before setting to work in cleaning and fixing up the damage that was done.

Alison let out a heavy sigh as she flopped back on the couch in one of the social areas. “Well… today was interesting…” she muttered tiredly before taking a sip of her hot cocoa.

“Interesting. But in a good way.” Victoria smiled as she sat next to the young teen. “At least the owners didn’t kick us out for the entire ruckus we caused.”

Alison nodded “Thankfully, but we managed to fid most of the damage. All that’s left is the window and it’s patched up for now.”

Victoria nodded as before taking a sip of her own cocoa. “So what are you going to do with your Riolu?”

The dark haired trainer smiled and pulled out the friend ball that continued the hyperactive pokémon. “I’m going to train it! He’s definitely strong”

“With an attitude to boot.” Victoria smirked slightly. “sure you can handle him?”

Alison nodded “With some patience I can. I just have to figure out how to keep him calm… or at least close to it” She muttered examining the ball further.

“in the mean time it looks like I won’t be able to take my eyes off him” She smirked slightly before releasing Riolu from the poke ball. He appeared in a flash of white shaking his head. He looked around for a minute trying to reorient him self.

“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Victoria questioned

Alison just nodded “of coarse, if anything happens ill just call him back.” She reached out and screeched behind the pokémon ear. “Looks like you’ll be traveling around with me, little guy.“ Riolu smiled happily leaning into her hand.

“Are you going to name him?”

“Name? Hm….” Alison looked down at the pokémon watching him as she played with one of the plush pillows. “How about Luke?”

Victoria laughed lightly, “Luke?”

Alison nodded “Yeah, it sounds good to me…” She reached over and picked up the pokémon “Do you like the name Luke?”

The Riolu let out a happy growled nuzzling his new trainer. Alison laughed before hugging her new pokémon. She rested her head on his. “Finally my team is starting to grow.

“With a strong start too” Victoria added.

Alison nodded before seeing Oliver pass the entrance to the room on his way up stairs.

“G’night Oliver!” She called.

The quiet trainer didn’t bother looking over and just raised his hand in a short wave as he started up the stairs.

Alison shook her head and took another sip of her warm drink.

“He‘s definitely a strange one.” Victoria sighed “how did you get wrapped up with him anyway?”

Alison smirked slightly and replied as calmly as she could, “I saved his life on the way to Snowpoint.”

“Are you serious?”

“Yep” Alison’s smirk widens. She took another sip of her cocoa before proceeding to tell the story.

Later that night Alison had finally settled into bed, her two pokémon settled on the night stand beside her. She glanced over at the orbs and sighed “I might have gotten a late start… but at least I’m of to a good one.” She rolled onto her back and stared up at the ceiling “And soon ill have my first badge and be one step closer to my goal. With a satisfied smile she pulled the covers over her shoulders and fell asleep.
