Unknown Heroes Ch 8
Chapter 8 – Frostbite
Alison shivered slightly as a harsh gust swept through the valley. Victoria had arrived at the center shortly after the battle and the group started down the mountain. The trio managed to make it half way down the first part of the mountain path, but the further they moved from the city the worse the weather became. The snow started to fall faster and the wind blew stronger. However the two older trainers continued like it was only a mild annoyance. Alison was becoming irritated that she was the only one lagging behind and shivering.
“Ungh, why Snowpoint?! Of all the cities in this damn region why the hell did the ship have to land at Snowpoint?! If it landed in Canalave I wouldn’t have to struggle through this damn blizzard freezing my butt off!” She thought angrily. Her angry silent rant was interrupted when the ground gave way beneath her and she sunk into a deep hole covering her up to her waist in snow. “Argh! Stupid snow!” She yelled trying to wriggle her way out of the tight hole.
Victoria looked back when she heard the out burst and laughed lightly. “Relax. Here let me help you.” She went over and gave the struggling girl up. Oliver just shook his head.
Alison sighed when she was out of the frozen trap. “Are you sure this is the only way down?”
Victoria nodded “Unless you want to cut through the forest risk running into some seriously strong wild pokémon and scale down the side of a cliff, yes it is.”
Alison blinked a few times, “Uh… I’ll deal with the snow.” Alison replied brushing the extra snow from her coat.
Victoria laughed, “Come on, if we keep walking this way we should run into a small Inn soon and warm up some.
“Then let’s get going!” Alison cheered as she walked faster through the snow. Oliver just sighed as he continued to walk, figuring her whining would finally stop. Alison’s new surge of energy didn’t last long though. A few minutes after, she was shivering and lagging behind once more, and the grumbling and angry outburst soon followed.
“Try not to focus too much on the cold. Think about something warm” Victoria advised with a small smile.
“Ok!” Alison smiled slightly as she tried to think about something warm. “Hm… a blanket… Oh! A warm blanket by a fire… And hot cocoa. Mmm, that sounds really good right now.” She thought to her self and sure enough some of the edge was taken off, making travel manageable.
The sun started to sink into the horizon making the temperature drop further. Alison struggled thought the knee-high snow as the wind blows harder, howling as it blows trough the trees. Alison pulled her hat down and buried her face in her scarf. “Please tell me we’re getting close to the rest house!” She yelled.
“Just a little further!” Victoria called back. “I think I see the porch lights!”
Alison looked up to see lights in the distance and a rush of adrenalin hit her. “Yes! Warmth!” she cheered as she ran ahead hoping to get there sooner. Unfortunately in her rush she failed to notice a dip in the snow and she fell into another hole.
“Damn it all!”

“This place is like heaven.” Alison sighed as she sat on a couch next to Victoria, both of them were wrapped in warm fluffily blankets and had hot cocoa. “I know right? This is one of my favorite rest stops.” Victoria smiled
“I can see why…” Alison looked around.
From the outside the Inn appeared worn down, but on the inside it was well kept and had a welcoming atmosphere. All of the floors were hard wood covered with some kind of area rug that varied from room to room. The Lobby was a small area with a desk and two couches. There were old wooden stair cases going to the second floor on both side of the room leading up to a small balcony that over looked the lobby, before leading into the hall ways where the rooms were located. The walls of the in were all painted warm colors ranging from soft pinks to creamy yellows. Past the lobby the house opened into two large sitting areas separated by a dining hall where there were warm drinks and small snacks.
The sitting area where the girls sat had a homey atmosphere to it. The walls were painted a cream color and the hard wood floors were covered by various crimson patterned rugs. Travelers were scattered about the room, most were trainers who were traveling around the Sinnoh region. They sat on chairs or couches that were scattered about the room, conversing on different topics. Most had their pokémon beside them enjoying the warmth.
“I’ve known the owners for a long time. I used to work here during the summers until I started at the center,” Victoria muttered before taking a sip of her cocoa. “You meet a lot of interesting trainers”
“I bet. Is this the only route leading up the mountain?”
“Pretty much, the only other routes are usually blocked by ice and snow by this time of year. Other then walking, taking a plane or ship is the only other alternative.”
“Yeah, but the runways are frozen over in Snow point.”
“It happens. That’s why so many people just walk up. The other guides at Snowpoint have resorted to marking the paths for travelers because so many got lost.”
Alison nodded “I can see why, I’m pretty sure we would have gotten lost if it hadn’t been for you. You really are a big help.”
“Ah, no worries. I don’t mind guiding Oliver and you down. It’s fun”
Alison nodded before getting up. “I’m gonna turn in for the night, before it gets to late”
Victoria nodded, “Alright, I’ll see you in the morning, bright and early.”
Alison nodded before starting to leave the room. She cut through the lobby to get to the stairs when she saw Oliver sitting in one of the couches away from the social gatherings in the sitting areas. He sat with his Espeon brushing out her soft fur.
She shook her head and left him to tend to his pokémon. “G’night Oliver” She called as she went up the stairs.
“Night, kid” he replied.
Alison just sighed as she went up to her room. She unlocked the door and stepped inside. The room was very similar to the one she had on the ship. The walls were a soft shade of green with white footboards and the floors were hard wood. There was a twin bed in the upper left corner fitted with light white linen sheets, and a quilt pattering with different shades of green. A painted white nightstand next stood next to the bed, with a green lamp and a digital clock on it. There was a desk dresser to the far left with a small vanity mirror on it. Next to the dresser was a window draped with dark green curtains. There was another door to her right leading to a small bathroom. Her coat and other winter clothing were rested on the couch that sat in front of the window. They had been placed there when the young teen defrosted her frozen limbs with a hot shower when she was shown to her room earlier.
She yawned and flopped back on her bed exhausted. She looked at the clock that read 10:48 before glancing at the pokeball next to it. She reached out and picked up the ball placing it under her pillow before sighing. “Tomorrow’s another long day. Maybe we can wait out the storm here… It wouldn’t be so bad…” She yawned once more before curled up under the warm quilts and promptly fell asleep.
*****
The wind howled outside the small Inn making the windows shudder slightly with every strong gust. Most of the lodgers in the Inn were asleep when the struck 2 a.m. and let out a soft chime. Alison was sound asleep dreaming of future victories but her Misdreavus wasn’t as calm. The pokeball beneath the trainer’s pillow shifted slightly before releasing the ghostly pokémon. Rhea hovered over her trainer before floating over to the window as if looking for something. She closed her eyes trying to listen past the howling wind and found what she was listening for, a small cry.
Rhea quickly flew over to her trainer and nudged trying to wake her, but the dark haired teen just pulled the covers over her head. Rhea became frustrated and sparked with electricity before letting out a small shock to zap her trainer awake.
Alison yelped as she jumped up in the bed. “Owe! Hey! What’s the big deal?!” She yelled smoothing her frizzed hair down. Rhea tugged on her sleeve urgently. “What? What is it Rhea?”
“Miss, Miss!” She floated dragged her trainer out of the bed.
“Ok, Ok. Relax,” the sleepy teen muttered, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. The impatient Misdreavus growled before flying through the window.
“Rhea!” Alison yelled before grabbing her blanket, coat and boots. She stumbled out into the hallway yanking her boots on and coat. She opened the door to the in wincing at the harsh gust that blew in.
“She better have a good reason!” She growled pulling the blanket over her head to protect her self from the wind. She squinted trying to see through the snow. “Rhea!?” She called trudging though the snow.
“Miss! Miss!” her Pokémon called back from the forest. Alison made her way to the forest as her Pokémon disappeared into the trees. “Wait!” she called almost falling into another ditch.
Misdreavus flew though the trees stopping every so often so her trainer could catch up. Alison followed after the ghost the cold starting to slow her down.
“Miss, Misdreavus!” her Pokémon called floating in mid air, finally coming to a stop. Alison panted as she caught up to her Pokémon, but when she got close she tripped over something landing face down in the snow. Alison growled as she pushed her self up and wiped the snow from her face. She growled softly as she tried to get up but something grabbed her leg, causing her to scream and pull away trying to get away from what ever grabbed her. She looked back to se what it was and gasped when se saw a black, blue and yellow Pokémon half covered in snow.
“What in the world…?” she muttered scrambling back to the half frozen creature and unburied it. She saw it was still breathing, just barely. Alison pulled the pokémon out of the snow before spotting a blue and black egg.
“An egg?” Alison picked the egg up before quickly pulled her blanket off and wrapped it around the pokémon. She managed to stand up with the pokémon ad egg and looked up at her pokémon. “Come on Rhea we have to get it back to the Inn”
“Miss, Miss” the Pokémon agreed as it flew ahead, guiding her trainer out of the forest.
“Rhea, clear away the snow with Psywave” Alison called out wincing as another strong almost knocked her over. Misdreavus flew ahead over and cleared away the snow with a strong psywave making it easier to get back to the in.
Meanwhile back at the inn Victoria heard the commotion in Alison’s room and went to see what happened only to find her missing. She checked the sitting rooms but there was no sign of the girl any way. “She couldn’t have gone out side… Not in this weather…” She muttered as she checked the kitchen. Everyone in Inn was asleep for the most part.
The front door opened letting in an icy breeze. Victoria shivered wondering as the wind blew past her. She looked up stepping back as something flew past her into one of the sitting rooms trailing snow behind it. “What the-?”
“Victoria!” Alison panted as she reached the in. She leaned against the door pushing it closed.
“Alison?! Victoria ran over helping her push the door shut to keep out the cold. “What were you doing out there?”
“Rhea, she… and then I… But… Couldn’t…” she fumbled between pants.
“Relax, breath”
Alison shook her head “Look!” she pulled part of the blanket back.
“Oh my, that’s a Lucario! Where did you find it?!”
“Outside, Rhea found it really that why I was out side,” Alison replied finally able to put together a coherent sentence. “And look what else I found.” She pulled the blanket off the egg as well.
Victoria’s eyes widen slightly “Come on, lets go up to my room.” She advised as she started back upstairs.
Alison nodded following, Rhea was already in the room making a small bed from the extra pillows. Alison smiled slightly before lying the pokémon down and letting Victoria work while she held onto the egg.
The experienced trainer check to make sure the frozen pokémon was alive first before starting to warm it up. Alison sat close by watching Victoria and getting anything she needed needed.
Victoria sighed shaking her head. “Sorry Alison…” She said quietly.
“W-what?” Alison asked hesitantly. “Y-you mean…”
Victoria looked away not really sure what to tell the girl. “To cold for too long.”
Alison bit her lip lightly looking down. Victoria put an arm around her. “Hey there’s still a chance she can make it, and if anything you saved the egg” She smiled slightly.
Alison smiled slightly looking down at the egg “At least…” She sighed. Misdreavus floated to the teen and nuzzled her softly.
“I’m just wondering why that Lucario was so far from where it’s supposed to be.”
“What do you mean?”
“Lucario aren’t found up here. It’s usually found in the caves of Mt. Coronet, Which is several miles from here.”
“Maybe she was trying to escape from something…”
“Maybe… but what?” Victoria shook her head “We’ll were bound to find out. Only way down is to go through Mt. Coronet…”
Alison nodded before letting out a yawn.
“Come on, you should get some sleep.”
Alison nodded before getting up “Thanks for the help. Um do you need any help with…” Her voiced trailed in uncertainty.
“Na, I’ll take care of it. It wouldn’t exactly be my first time” Victoria forced a small smile before getting up from the floor as well. “No problem. I’ll see you in a few hours.”
Alison nodded before going to go to her room to get some rest, or at least try to.
*****
Alison lies in her bed staring at the ceiling unable to fine any sleep. Her mind kept wondering to the thought of the mother Lucario that was unable to be saved. She rolled on her side and saw clock read 6:06 a.m. before glancing over at Rhea who was fast asleep on the couch next to the egg. She pulled the covers over her shoulders to see if she could at least find an hour’s worth of rest before she had to get up for break fast. She closed her eyes and tried to clear her head until a bright shine over took the room. Alison winced as the bright light shined through her eye lids, and almost blinded her when she opened her eyes. She sat up slowly using her hand to block out most of the light until the glow finally faded. Alison blinked away the spots from her eyes before focusing her sleepy eyes on the origin of the Light source.
She gasped softly at the sight. “Oh my…”
