Between Borders - Screenplay

FADE IN

EXT. CORE - NIGHT

The frozen core of a planet. Massive stone pillars hold the
crust of the planet. Everything's dark and quiet.

JACK, 20, is sitting against one of the pillars. His clothes
are old and torn. His breath can be seen. He shivers in the
cold.

JACK (VO)
Someone once told me forever
doesn't mean forever.

An earthquake. The core shakes violently. Boulders and rocks
fall from the crust. Jack doesn't move, unaffected by the
chaos around him. The quake stops.

JACK (VO)
I don't remember who, I've been
here so long.

Orange lights begin to flash around different parts of the
core. Another earthquake, much smaller from the last one.
Dust flutters down.

JACK (VO)
I was sent here as punishment. Many
years ago. The wrath of gods is
great they say.

The quake stops. Jack looks up. Stars begin to appear.

EXT. PLANET - NIGHT

Giant machines carry the crust of a planet away from the
core. They're like floating islands. Massive cities can be
seen on the surface of them.

EXT. CORE - NIGHT

As the islands are being moved higher and farther apart,
more stars appear. The core is covered in starlight.

JACK
I guess they finally decided to get
off this heap.

Something gold shines in the light a few feet from Jack. He
walks over to it and picks it up. A gold locket. After an
examination he recognizes it.

INT. HOUSE - DAY - FLASH BACK

JILL, 20, is looking in a mirror. Jack comes up from behind
and puts a locket around her neck. Her fingers skim over it.

JILL
Where did you find this?

JACK
I didn't, It found me. Like you. Do
you like it?

A big smile creeps across Jill's face.

JILL
Yes.

JACK
Will you wear it?

JILL
Forever.

EXT. CORE - NIGHT - PRESENT

Jack, holding the locket, looks up. One of the floating
islands is right over him. Its much smaller compared to the
others. Jack puts the locket around his neck and ganders
around. A bunch of junk had fallen from the planet's crust.
Jack spots a car.

MONTAGE

--The core covered in junk.

--Jack driving.

--Jack putting a giant spring into the trunk.

--Jack finding a jacket and putting it on.

--Jack carrying a thick length of wire around his shoulder.

--Jack driving, this time with car full of junk.

END MONTAGE

EXT. CORE - NIGHT

Jack is leaning on the car, taking a break. He looks down
and sees a piece of metal sticking out of the ground. He
pulls it out. It's a wrench. Jack pops open the trunk and
throws it. He slams the trunk closed.

Jack is suddenly engulfed in bright light. He shields his
eyes in pain. After his eye get a second to adjust he looks
toward the light. The sun is coming up. Jack quickly hops
into his car.

EXT. FIELD OF JUNK - SAME

Billboards, cars and other heaps of junk begin to melt in
the direct beam of sunlight.

INT. CAR - SAME

Jack cranks the car, but it doesn't start up. He starts
whaling on the gas. No dice.

Jack begins to sweat. The windows fog up. Outside of the car
more junk begins to melt. The tires pop.

Jack keeps cranking the car and stomping on the gas. Finally
the car fires up. He throws it into reverse.

EXT. CAR - SAME

The car is flying backwards away from the sun. The bumper is
getting red hot. The deflated tires shred off causing the
car to swerve a little.

The focal point of the sunlight is getting closer and
closer. Everything in it's path melts instantly.

INT. CAR -SAME

Jack has his eye on the back window. He swerves back and
forth avoiding the junk in his path.

JACK'S POV:

A hole in the ground, less then a mile away. It's big enough
for the car.

EXT. CAR - SAME

The bumper falls off and melts away. A small explosion under
the hood. White smoke starts poring out of the engine.

The car slows down a little. The focal point of the sunlight
is closer then ever.

INT. CAR - SAME

Jack is breathing hard now.

JACK'S POV:

The hole in the ground is just a few yards away. The rear of
the car is heading straight towards it.

INT. HOLE - SAME

The hole isn't a vertical drop, but a slope. The car flies
in, the hood smashes against the ceiling. The car reverses a
few feet into the hole till it slams into the end wall.

Bright light is coming from the entrance of the hole. Molten
metal starts poring in.

INT. CAR - SAME

Jack is breathing hard. Outside the molten metal inches
closer and closer. Jack closes his eyes. Screams.

INT. HOUSE - DAY - FLASH BACK

Jill is screaming. Jack is punched in the face by CROWN, 20.

CROWN
Did you think I wouldn't find out?

He punches Jack again.

JILL
Stop it.

JACK
I'm okay, just stay out of this.

Crown, single-handedly, picks up Jack.

CROWN
You shall pay for your betrayal.

The whole house shakes. The floor breaks apart and a giant
chasm forms under Jack.

JILL
Stop, it's not his fault.

JACK
She's lying, she's just trying to
protect me. I came to her. I forced
her to love.

CROWN
She doesn't love you. She loves me.
She'll love me forever.

Crown drops Jack.

INT. CAR - DAY - PRESENT

Jack opens his eyes. The molten metal is inches away from
the car. Jack gets out of the car.

INT. HOLE - SAME

Jack pops open the hood and gives it a tug. The hinges are
mostly broken from the hood smashing into the ceiling. The
molten metal starts burning his legs. His clothes catch on
fire. Jack gives the hood another tug and it rips off.

Jack plants the hood into the ground to protect the car. The
molten metal pushes against the hood. Jack tries his best to
hold it up. The hood start turning red hot. Jack screams in
pain. Pores begin forming, metal begins gushing through.

The hole suddenly turns dark. The molten metal cools and
becomes solid. Jack exhales, his breath can be seen. The
metal shatters for cooling so fast.

EXT. HOLE - LATER

A massive floating island is blocking the sun. The car,
obviously on its last leg, drives out of the hole.

EXT. CORE - NIGHT

Jack is standing next to two giant parallel metal beams.
He's watching the sun set. His cloths are burnt, but Jack is
uninjured.

JACK
Time to get to work.

MONTAGE:

-- Jack trying to rip out the front seat of the car.

-- Jack flipping the car over.

-- Jack mounting the seat between the metal beams, the giant
spring underneath it.

-- Jack working on a release mechanism, the wrench as the
lever.

-- Jack running the wire around the car's bare wheels and
the spring.

END MONTAGE

Jack is on his back, pushing the gas pedal with his hand.
The wheels turn pulling the wire taut. The giant spring
starts tightening up.

Jack stands up and double checks all his work. He looks
towards the horizon, the slightest bit of light is starting
to show.

Jack rushes to the car seat and sits in it. He looks up. The
small floating island from earlier is right over him. He
fastens his seat belt.

The sun peaks over the horizon. Jack is bathed in light. He
smiles, even chuckles a little. Jacks pulls the release
mechanism.

Nothing happens. Jack tries again and again, it doesn't
work.

JACK
No, no.

He tries again and again. The lever breaks off. Everything
starts getting hot. All of it will melt soon.

JACK
No.

Jack leans back in the chair and closes his eyes.

INT. HOUSE - DAY - FLASH BACK

Jack and Jill are standing in front of each other. The gold
locket around her neck.

JILL
What if he finds out?

JACK
I'll be sent away.

JILL
Where? For how long?

JACK
Forever.

JILL
Forever doesn't mean forever.

JACK
This time it does.

EXT. CORE - DAY - PRESENT

Jack open his eyes and hops out of the seat. The high
focused beams of the sun are getting close, fast.

Jack starts pushing the car. It inches forward. He backs up
and rams it, the car lurches forward a few feet. Another ram
and it lurches a few more.

The sun is very close now. Jack hops back into the car seat
and buckles up. The car is red hot. The wire holding the
spring down thins, then snaps.

The spring releases. Jack and the seat launch into space.

EXT. FLOATING ISLAND - DAY

A single house surrounded by trees, flowers, and other forms
of life. A giant ball of fire smashes into island, a few
yards from the house. A crater is formed

Jack starts to crawl out of crater, dirty but unharmed. He
pulls himself onto solid ground and looks up. Jill is there,
standing if front of him. Awe struck.

Jack stands up and smiles. Jill smiles back.

JILL
Told you.
