If no eggs hatched in time to receive this form of bond they are either abandoned or eaten by the mother. Usually in this case the two eggs who are hatched will be the only survivors of her brood. The others will be eaten to help regain some energy before shes off hunting.
Second reason, during the incubation period the female regulates the temperature to keep the eggs alive. Occasionally any disturbance int he nest, such as a egg hunter or something disturbs the form of the nest, also alters the temperature. Which causes either early death, a gender change or a late birth which is death in its own way.
