There are different hardness scales and shades of pencil lead. Art pencils can range from a 525-9H (Lightest Lead) to a 525-9xxB (Darkest and Hardest Lead).
If you want to draw a simple sketch, without the hassle of the lead mess, then choose a lighter lead. So when you mess up and you erase the lead, the lead won't leave as much as a stain as say a 525-2B would compared to a 525-8H.
