I have yet to make any characters with tattoos, but this is actually very helpful, I haven't seen any tutorials like this.

This is helpful. :) I disagree on the white though... a friend has a white and orange koi tatooed on his leg and the white parts are very well visible. Not the entire motif is colored out, but enough to set it apart from the skin and give it a feeling of three-dimensionality.
